It’s a decent movie, an homage to the giant monster movies and Japanese robot movies. It will definitely skyrocket the already high price of Robotech-style kits.
Robotech- now that is a good cartoon from my young’n days I would head to the theater for, crowds & prices be danged.

I was also a little surprised that it came in third at the box office over the weekend. I saw it on Saturday and had to sit way up front due to a packed theater - a rare occurrence in the age of multiplex theaters. I guess the upside was that the robots and monsters looked extra large without the 3-D effects! [:P]
I have to admit to enjoying the movie for what it was. I was actually disappointed that I didn’t hate the whole thing like I had thought I would. For a dumb monster movie, it was really good! The Dance-Dance Revolution control system was a stupid idea, but it didn’t bother me too much. I think my only major criticism was that the movie failed to engage me emotionally. I cried like a baby when Spock “died” in ST II, and felt the devastating loss when the big tree burned down in Avatar, but felt nothing while watching Pacific Rim. Oh well, it was a big, fun, dumb monster movie! If you watched monster movies as a kid, definitely go see this one!
Yes, there was a lot about the jaegers that were odd; like why locate the pilots in the head? Seemed like an obvious place for the kaiju to rip at and kill the crew. Running out of oxygen, drowning? And for two folks to share the same thoughts, they seemed to do a lot of talking to control their jaeger.
And the whole reason for the “shut down the jaeger program” was weak, especially after the Sydney attack.
But overall, it was a fun movie. I had recently watched one of the old King Kong movies (the one with the robot mecha-Kong). It was a terrible movie, but was still fun to watch.
Saw Pacific Rim in a double feature at the drive in theatre. Playing with Lone Ranger.
Meh. Pacific Rim I thought was just kinda silly though my husband liked it more than I did,
but not by much.
Lone Ranger dragged. Shame, I was looking forward to LR.
I’m going today. I’ve convinced the wife it is an epic romantic story. I don’t think she will notice until it’s over…well, maybe if I buy her dinner afterward…
Saw it last night and loved it!!! Yeah, parts didn’t make a great deal of sense but hey it’s giant mechs fighting Kaiju, not Hamlet! And it served up the mecha on monster action in spades!
Only real thing I didn’t like was the modern hyper-kinetic film technique where everything happens so quick it was hard for me to follow at times. But then again I think pretty much every modern movie does this.
And all the Kaiju were evil! None like your lovable buddy Gammy, friend of children and protector of the Earth!
If someone did models of Gypsy Danger and the other Jaegers (sp???) I’d buy 'em!!!
I have to say I was entertained from start to finish. I’m not a movie critic type, so I can still have fun at 56 years old! Would I buy the DVD? Probably not, would I watch it again? Yes, most definitely!
I’m usually pretty easy to please. Heck, I actually liked GI JOE! and District 9 wasn’t all that bad!
But there are limits and Pacific Rim fell flat for me.

A Saturday morning cartoon ?
I watched it with my son who turns 9 on the 13th. He loved it and is probably the target audience for the movie. I probably wouldn’t buy it on DVD for myself; I didn’t like it that much that I’d want to own it. I did want to see it, I was glad I saw it and I enjoyed myself.
My 8 yr old will probably want it and he’ll watch it a hundred times on his little portable DVD player. He about wore out his Transformers DVD. My daughter even uploaded a video of him reciting the opening monologue to Transformers.
Guess I loved it since I’m 43 going on 9…
Pulled out a bunch of old Gojira/Godzilla DVDs and been of a bit of a binge lately. I do prefer them over ‘Pacific Rim’ somewhat since guys in giant rubber monster suits are just more fun somehow than CGI. Don’t ask me to explain it!
Gamera, I agree Even the most recent Godzilla and Gamera movies still used the suits and models and they still looked more believable.
