Hi all
I have here 2 Italeri commando cars, one built ,one started and what i would like to do is Kit them out with Brownings instead of the twin Vickers k gun mounts.I have the Academy .30 and .50 cal machine gun set here and would like to know which Browning guns would be on the jeeps .30 cal or .50 cal?
TIA
Regards
Pete
Stormbringer, the commando jeeps almost always were armed with vickers and bren guns especially in Europe. They usually used a mixture of weapons so you could use either the .30 cal or .50 cal gun.I would not use more than one per jeep though.Use it along with the Vickers or bren guns. The British seemed to prefer the .30 cal especially on tanks.I would put it on a pedestal mount either between the seats or by the rear panel of the body.Happy modeling!

Thanks for your reply,it clears up one question for me.The other question I have is what colour were the ETO jeeps painted ?Were they left in OD or did the British paint them another colour?

Pete
From the pics that I have seen Pete, they were either left O.D. or may have been repainted in Bronze Green. Hard to tell from the B&W pics.
ive seen pictures of the SAS Jeeps in green and Black cammo (im not sure if you could use the Mickey Mouse cammo)
ive got the New Tamiya Jeep with the Calibre 35 SAS Jeep conversion (that comes with vickers guns)
(i have seen a site with good photos on it but i cant find it yet but ill have a look for it)
heres some photos for you
heres one in Africa with a .50
[:0] Nice pics! I really like that last one. Are those twin 50’s monted on the rear?
look like vickers to me …
I’m a newbie. Never heard of a “vickers” till I read this thread. i assume a vickers is a european heavy machine gun?
the Vickers is a British gun, the ones on the SAS Jeeps are aircraft guns
i will probably be wrong, but i don’t think those are Vickers.
all the Vickers stuff i see looks like belt-fed and water cooled.

those drum fed guns on the jeeps look more like Lewis guns to me.

but the text says they were largely phased out by 1936.
(of course, after Dunkirk, any available working firearm was likely pressed back into service!)
they are unlikely to be Bren guns, which used a ‘banana’ magazine that went on the top!

overall, this is a great site for weapons study.
browse around.

of course, no sooner did i post the above,
when i discovered that a number of sections are ‘under construction’.
not that it takes away from the gun data,
but there is not as much vehicle stuff there as i had thought.

I think you’ve nailed it Ed … Lewis guns in all the pictures. The bottom one also has a .50 in the “shotgun” position.
