Sandbags and Strykers

I got to thinking, the M1126 Stryker would look good with sandbags. My question is, did they ever load these up with sandbags? Obviously we know now they wouldn’t be used as additional armor protection, but would we ever have them on the Strykers? If so anyone got any pics? I’m getting closer to completion of my Stryker, and am just about to the point of adding on a bunch of stowage.

I’ve never seen a Stryker with sandbag armor myself, not that they wouldn’t exsist, but (speaking as a former Lazy Private) they’re a LOT of work to fill and secure, and weight to lug around… If the main threat is RPGs and other shaped-charge weapons, the RPG screens are enough, in most cases, although throwing a few in between the screen and hull in certain places wouldn’t hurt, but there’s field of vison and fire issues to consider… I dunno if the crews sandbag the floors though… On my vehicle, we made spall-liners from “extra” PASGT vests and put sandbags on top of 'em though…

Now would that be “extra” PASGT vests you just happened to “acquire”?

Considering the time and effort to build the bird cage around the vehicle, the answer is no.

There is no good place to put them. Besides, most of the Strykers you see are loaded up with gear. They don’t need the sandbags.

Rounds Complete!!

Well, this one is more being done like an early vehicle you’d have seen on the bases. Like when I was taking care of my Grandfather, we spent ALOT of time on Ft Lewis, at the time they were testing these things out. The biggest diff I see between the ones on Ft Lewis I saw, and the Trumpeter model, is the ones on Ft Lewis had alot more area up top to open up for the soldiers to stand up and halfway out. I was thinking od depicting this one, on home turf. Like they would have out on the bases doing training and such. I know on Ft Lewis they liked to leave sandbags EVERYWHERE. Was just a thought thuogh, I thought they might look good, but if there is no precedent, then I won’t bother. Yeah it could be hyopthetical, but I don’t fee like getting flamed on here when I post the finished pics.

Brother Maynard shall now recite from the Booke of Armaments…

Osprey Publications, Stryker Combat Vehicles, page 42, caption with accompanying photo…“An overhead view of an ICV shows the arrangement of the slat armor. The squad leaders hatch is seen to the left of the vehicle commander’s hatch. Riflemen occupy the rear “air guard” hatches. The black fabric rolls are Kevlar fragmentation/bomb blankets. It is recommended that sandbags not be used for additional protection with slat armor because of the added weight, but nonetheless they are still employed. (US Army)”

The photo shows an overhead view of a slatted Stryker, heavily laden with gear and a few sandbags around the air guard hatches…but nothing elaborate.

If my scanner worked, I’d scan the darn thing and post it…hear that, Santa? To heck with the cookies, Santa, there’s a bottle of Stoli in the freezer.

Hope that helps. The Osprey book is ok, but the Concord Publications book is better.

I don’t recall the source… Nor am I sure about Statutes of Limitations under the UCMJ [;)]

HVH, if my time serving was for nothing else, it was for this; there isn’t a source to recall. Uncle Sam looks out for those willing to find things. And the UCMJ, while having provisions for stealing, does NOT cover aquisitions. And, if there is no explicit article, then there is no punishement, meaning no problem!

Of course, MY interpretation of the UCMJ might be a tad on the “loose” side.

Michael

Hey that sounds right to me[;)]
