A couple questions on weathering if I may
Hard first - I know people use artists oils to make wash’s. Can I use Artists water colours for this or is there something about oils that makes them better?
Easy question, I have just started my first salt weathering project and was wondering for those people that do it how do you apply the salt? Do you mix the salt and water then spread it on the model or do you paint some water on and sprinkle the salt on over?

For your first question: Yes, you can use watercolors for a wash. It’s all about preference. If you use any wash, just make sure the model is clear coated first to “protect” the finish. I use watercolor exclusively and really like the result.
Second: I find it easy to apply drops of water to the model and then sprinkle salt onto the drops. Then, you can shape the “chip” like you want by moving it with a brush.

I prefer oil myself as I apply it over a acrylic coat. If you use water, you may find that you need a very small amount of liquid detergent to break the surface tension of the water, otherwise it will puddle.
