Yesterday (19 February) I had the opportunity to attend a workshop put on by none other than Rob Ferreira in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Many of you may know Rob as ‘Scratchmod’.
About 24 people were in attendance. Each of us received a resin Matilda turret that Rob had previously given a quick basecoating and chipping (yeah, the poor guy chipped 24 Matilda turrets to get ready for this thing!!!). Rob then walked us through the process that he uses to achieve some of his dynamic results.
The workshop was held in an Ratskeller, so when we broke for lunch, there was some great German food and beer to whet our appetites.
The afternoon had more weathering and then a color modulation demo by Iain Hamilton.
While nothing that I saw yesterday would amount to rocket science, it was great to sit down with a bunch of fellow modelers and see how people do things in person, rather than trying to visualize it from online descriptions and pictures.
Here are a few pics of my effort. Definately not up to Rob’s standard, but I really was pleased with the results. As Rob said, sometimes all it takes is the willingness to give it a try. It is too easy to NOT try because you are sure you’ll mess it up.
Just want to give a big thanks to Rob! He put together a great workshop. I am sure all who attended had a ball.
PS If you start seeing a bunch of heavily weathered Matilda turrets popping up in all the armor forums, now you’ll know why… [:P]
Man I am really jealous you got to go to that workshop. You turret came out great. One of these days I am going to get around to trying that stuff on a worn out hulk of an m1 I have laying around.
I’m tellin’ ya, after having had someone ‘hold my hand and walk me though it’, I realize just how logical it really is. It’s really is just a matter of layering the oils. Like I said, I’m not going to claim to be the next scratchmod, but I definately learned some techniques that I’ll apply to my upcoming builds.
I think that actually watching some of the masters at work would aid me tremendously to becoming a better modeler. I have picked up what I can here and n Youtube but to actually have feedback as you are doing it must be awesome!
You are absolutely right. And that is what made this workshop so great. You could turn to the guy next to you and be like, ‘Uhhh, dude… how’d you do that…’ And then, Rob would come over and you could ask him the same thing… It was like being 13 again and sitting at the dining room table with all your modeling pals… except with beer. [;)]
I…jealous…speechless…brain overload. That had to be really cool. Can’t wait to see all the destroyed turrets. I have to admit when I’m in my lhs or modellers club meeting and say “I’m gonna destroy this nice new $70 kit”, people usually give me some pretty odd and wierd looks. One person even asked me why I would want to destroy a kit…my response was “cuz it looks really cool”.
I would love to watch rob in person and be able to ask him questions…sooooooooooo jealous(and the beer and german food part ain’t bad, either…definately glad to see more rustheads coming out, doesnt make me feel so alone…lol
I think we should get Rob, Doog and Wbill in the same room and have 'em put on demo’s…I’d pay to see that !!
Sounds like a lot of fun boyd and your turret looks pretty neat too! Agree with you 100% in terms of the value of being there “in person” and sounds like Rob put on a great seminar. [B]
