Being a returnee to modelling, and a first time weather, I’ve been experiementing. Anyway, I needed to make the rear exhaust on my Tamiya Churchill look rusty. This looked really good, so I thought I’d say how I did it. First I used Humbrol number 11, silver, brush on, roughly and thick. When that dried, some number 9, tan, again, brushed on roughly and thick. As I finished, whilst freshly wet, I smeared CML Dark Rust powder on it (with my finger). When dryish I roughed the paint, so a little silver just shows, and then ran a silver pencil along he edges.

I am hoping for some comment, and other ideas on how to make rust?

The picture shows the main exhaust, and the two tubes, both attached to the sprue.

Generally, I just use a generous amount of white glue, talcom powder, and thick Humbrol rust colour roughly applied to the muffler, exhaust, or turbocharger, as the case may be. When dry, I give it a dark rust wash, followed by a dark orange drybrush. Depending on the severity of the rust, I’ll sometimes drybrush some silver in various parts. If it’s a diesel engine exhaust, I’ll be sure to drybrush (pastel chalk works great here too) some black soot deposits too.
