Russian vehicle numbers

Hy, can anyone tell me what means numbers on russian armoured vehicles?
I know that all vehicles have three numbers but I don’t know what each number characterize. Is that a unit, brigade, serial number of tank or something else?
Please help.

Thanks Peridexion for such detailed reply, but I must apologyze because I didn’t put in question that I mean for modern russian vehicles, from year 1955. to forward, and not WW2…
