I’‘m presenting this as more of a background W.I.P. than my usual SBS blog. I’‘m going to need some number of carefully selected figures for the Russian Railside Re-supply Scene I’‘m working on–for which I’'m already working on the ongoing Railcar Projects in 1/35th.
The 1st two figures up are two of my very favorite I’'ve found in 1/35th and are both Made in U.S.A. under the Platoon namebrand, now OOP but still findable (at anywhere from $3.99- to$23.99 !). Both of these are sculpts by the fantastic Kwangyeol Lee.
Just superb stuff-really easy to clean-up.
No need for a replacement head here!
Much better look at the details with Tamiya Super-Fine White Primer applied. They have a few light coats of acylic-flesh-base airbrushed on also. (heads -not fully seated as kept seperate for now)
I actually built-up and primered these two Russians quite a long time ago and have wanted to get to painting them.
I won’'t go into all the exact painting details in this thread, but my approach will be very much as seen in my previous recent figure blog for the U.S. Armoured Infantry. Basically Oils for flesh & Vallejo primarily for everything else, although I sometimes make use of Floquil & Testors enamels as well as some inks
Following the acrylic flesh base, a number of oil washes are seen in place here, very much as outlined in the recent figure thread
I really like the highlights on the red star, very realistic as well the hat. Great heads up on this fantastic company producing Russian resin figures, I may have to indulge in a few myself one day.
As far as prices go for available stock of these–you gotta shop around. I got these for $3.99 a while back from Squadron! (At the same time stankrats had them at about $23!!)

He has a major squint and is posed shielding his eyes from the sun so modelling his eyes doesn’t seem to be the way to go–still i need to add eyebrows—and definately a few extreme highlights
His 2-day beard was painted in with the old convention of mixing Payne’s grey in with the flesh-colour—I’m considering a tad more…
I painted in his soft helmet pretty quickly using my favorite tires colors!

You may notice the long side of the chinstrap has a break in the piping(after a resin repair) I was already painting when I had to make this repair and made no attempt to hide the break in the piping thinking a tear there wasn’t entirely unlikely()
Really cool, Indy. The helmet looks awesome. Skin tone seems a little on the yellowish side, but that could just be the lighting. The blending is well done. Can’t wait to see him atop hisself, full figure shots!
Hey–Thanks Steve, I guess I was going for tan–I just didn’t want him to have the same skintone as the other guy–anyway still a WIP- I knew he needs some lights and meantime I got some tips I want to try from Allen Y a world-class-type figure guy .See ya soon.

~Work’s begun to leatherize the coats~
Again, not a real SBS here but showing a few steps–I began with a heavy over-all wash of Vallejo 867 Dark BlueGrey just to show-up the folds clearly & afterward painted in the darkest shadows with 950 Black with a bit of of 927 Dark Flesh
Not too concerned about complete coverage–you can still see the overspray areas from the flesh areas I’d airbrushed in
The next step was an over-all brown glaze made of 596 glaze Medium, Matt Varnish, and a few drops of what else? 871 Leather Brown
Here’s where I stopped treating both coats the same–I actually want a darker effect to the longer coat, so here on I’ve concentrated efforts on the other, again using Black lightened with dark Flesh, but switching to 845 Sunny Skintone for the lighter colours.
I think it’s started looking a little leathery on the left, no? No bright highlights yet, but before I’m done I’ll do some burnishing to get a satin effect if posssible
I replaced the heads temporarily to have a looky
I did make an attempt to employ a bit more facial highlght but I don’t claim them finished there.
Ok, a little progress, I’m liking hat used look to his coat so far, plenty more to do and his buddy gets the blacker looking model.
What color do you suppose the jacket is on the fellow below?
Gosh, I [ht] your posts… keeping them coming! [Y] Never thought about applying darker paints before the lighter thinned coat of paint for the uniforms. I did the opposite… base coat first then darker and lighter washes. Gonna give it a shot next time…
~Steve~ Hey thanks Bro–I believe that coat is a soft dark brown hide–possibly dyed black when new–now worn to mostly brown leather.
This jacket was repro’d to look about like that :
~Andy~ hey Buddy–thanks—The idea was to lay in some basic contrast-then kind of dye the whole thing just to get the different look from fabrics–tinting the shadow along with the areas really taking the color.
~Update Incoming~ (maybe tommarrow–this site is crawling slow at the mo)
Most of it to the fur collar and belts adorning this guy. I found that the best approach to a multi-colour fur like this isn’t quite straightforward, but to have it be a bit jagged & broken when over-lapping the colours.
Vallejo colours used for the fur we’re 872 Chocolate,913 Yellow Ocre, & 860 Med. Flesh.919 Foundation White over 950 Black. Before startinig on the fur collar, I sprayed the coat with Krylon #1311 Matt Fixitive–which was less matt than the Vallejo finish and gave me a semi-satin glare to the leather, before going on to add the fur & the rest.
The other chap got a his shirt blocked-in but I haven’t gone back to detail the collar-tabs as of yet.
His trousers got based painted in 867 Dark Bluegrey (a favorite Panzer grey) and the other trouser was a mix of 880 Khaki & 914 green Ochre
The belts and harness on both figures we’re based in near-black and painted with a rusty-orange glaze, a 822 Ger. Blk Brown wash and highlights made adding some 976 Buff to the glaze
Metallics we’re added with the 'ole Citadel Boltgun Metal .[;)]
The boots have so far just been base-painted with one of the darker greys from the leathers pallete.
Jeez, you have made those Russkies look real good… I thought they all were ugly! [:^)] Outstanding work on highlighting tones on the leather jackets. [Y]
