I’m about to paint a T-34 & a KV-1. I’m not sure if the usual burnt umber pin wash will work because of the tanks’ dark green color. Do I need to use a color lighter than dark green to get the effect?

What color is your base? I think that would depend on the pin wash, and the color you may use to highlight / drybrush.
Generally, use a lighter color for dark base coats, and a dark color for light base coats. A good oil mixture for dusty tone is Raw Umber + White (Add or subtract for depth of color) + a tiny (and I mean “tiny!!”) bit of yellow to give it a warmer hue. (Yellow oil is notoriously concentrated!)
