[8D] has anyone used Rub `n Buff to simulate metal finish on aircraft ?
I am thinking of using this on some of my 1/72 aircraft.
Only use it to do weathering… Never been able to achieve the natural metal look with it but I’ve seen modelers who did! Supposed to apply it on a glossy surface to get it looking right.
I used it to finish a 1/32 scale Mig-21.Came out nice. I wanted a weather beaten look, so I pre-shaded with flat black first. I have used Rub n Buff for all kinds of metal finishes. Test and experiment first.
I’ve only used it pretty much for weathering–like dj above, but used it years ago before the advent of Metallizer, Alclad, etc. to create metal finish on small components. It’s good stuff. I’ve no reason to suspect that it wouldn’t work over larger surfaces, except that application would have to be fairly even and consistent for the best finish. I’ve only seen two colors, silver and gold. Are there any others?

The only thing I’ve ever used it for is weathering and have’t used it for that for several years. Got kind of messy at times. I did read an article in a British model mag not long ago about a guy who airbrushed a coat of Rub’n Buf on one of his models though. Thinned it with mineral spirits I believe.
