Hi there!!! I´m not new to the world of painting figures, I have a large colection of warhammer and few historic figures, but I always have the same problem:
I can´t mix a nice color to paint rope, I try several combination, but I´m not pleased with the results… how do you paint your´s ropes??? help please…
It depends on the rope’s color, but to make a common tan rope, you could use a sand base, wash with dark brown and then dry brush with the sand lightened with white.
The heavier your wash is the older the rope will look.
Sounds dumb, but I carve away the molded rope and replace it with ship riggers twine. You will find this in the modelsection that deals with the model ship parts and it is a thick ropelike string (not like sewing thread) that is usually wrapped around a card. Not expensive and looks great.
I also carve awaychain and replace it with jewelry chain painted to match.
Rope, like hair, is difficult to recreate with paint because of its depth of detail. Here’s a suggestion for sisal/hemp rope:
Use a base coat of medium saturation low chroma green, such as a “green” shade of olive drab. Glaze with slightly transparent yellow-tan, then wash with burnt umber. Finally, highlight by drybrushing with a very gray off-white. That gives four levels of color depth, and, as long as you keep everything in the green/yellow part of the spectrum, its pretty effective.
im no expert myself but what Ive found is that tons of washses really brings out texture, the more the better. Heres a picture of some rope I have started. nowhere near done, just to show you how well washes work.
I think the guy up above had the right idea, I dont think plastic will look like convincing rope no matter how well its painted. The stuff I used in the picture was from a roll of my sisters hot pink bracelet string from about 5 years ago.
By the way, not trying to take over your thread, just wanted to say to SteveM, glad you like how it’s turning out, Ill have somepictures soon, maybe tonight, if you keep an eye on the armor forum.
