"Roll out the Barrel"

I picked up this kit at a Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago for ten bucks and it just sat in the stash. Mistake…shoulda built it a long time ago. I didn’t know much about the F3F, aka “The Flying Barrel”, till I decided to build one and do a little research. It really is an amazing and important airplane and Accurate Miniatures did this one justice. The surface detail and fit is impressive and was alot of fun to build. Keeping everything aligned was a little tricky and the PE rigging requires patience, but the end result is satisfying just using the parts that came in the box. The decal sheet gives you the option to do virtually any F3F ever built. Great kit…highly recommended.

Thanks for looking

Awesome build Jerry! The NMF is especially nice. You never cease to amaze me with your work, always a pleasure to see. In fact, I would go so far as to say this is cooler than glow-in-the-dark underwear! [:D]

Very nice work! I just did one of these in 72nd, not a favorite. But yours makes me want to obtain the AM kit and give it a go. Again, very nice work! Love the engine and the rigging.

I can’t say I ofter, if ever comment on completed work, regardless if it is Good, Bad or Ugly, but that is lovley.

I have a keen interest in all Military A/C, but almost 100% prefer jet, or at a push WW2 heavies when modeling- that bird has me considering thing I wouldn’t normally go near.

I’m with Frank… I sure do enjoy looking at your builds. That sure was 10 bucks well spent.

Trexx falls off chair!

That is one beautiful model! Wowie!

… is it 1/48?

I have to tell ya, I did not read the intro at first - I thought pics 2 & 3 were prototype pics when I first looked at them. Fantastic build [tup] [:)][wow]

She’s an immaculate build, Jerry! It actually looks like photos of the real thing!

I can sure see why they call it the flying barrel too[8D]

Very Nice! What is the thingy on the top center of the wing?

Very nice build. What scale is it ???

Thanks for the kind words guys.

The instruction sheet says that’s a gun camera mounted on top the wing. Rather bulky is it not? LOL

The model is 1/48 scale.

Thanks again for looking and commenting.[#toast]

Jerry,

A very nice build. I’m slowly collecting all of the Grumman Navy fighters, and hope I do as well on my F3F’s. We always say build for yourself and you’ve done a good job. I’m sorry, but I have to give a gig on markings accuracy. A black section leader should be a -10, not a -7. True blue is the -7 section color. Only a few of us nuts would pay attention to something like that.

C’mon now - 'fess up. Those are really pics of the real thing in some museum!! [:-^]

Great work, Jerry!!

Ken

Jerry - flawless again [bow] What a beautifull finish - just awsome friend.

Jerry - how did you do the NMF? Yellow? Truely amazing work.

Ouch…I was wondering about that. I guess I was confused by the section leader numbers. I thought as long as it was a 1,4,7,10 etc…I was good. But you’re correct…should be a 10. I’ve got plenty of numbers on the sheet to fix that. Thanks for the heads up Wayne.

Jerry

Thanks Bioya! The fuse. is Alclad white aluminum and the doped wing fabric is duraluminum. I mixed a little red with mostly yellow to paint the upper wing.

[bow]I BOW TO THEE! That bird is absolutley beautiful. A true work of art…and ten bucks? Wow man…I’m truly jealous of the build…I just got back into aircraft, so it’ll be a few years till I get up to that standard. Well done.

Well at least it wasn’t edible.

As far as the plane goes WOW ! Biplanes are tough enough, but wow! NE Ohio? The wife and I are originally from Elyria.

Super work, Jerry, very well done.
