im fairly new to armor modeling, certainly not modeling , but I was wondering. Is it easier to paint the road wheels off, before putting them on, or just paint everything after its on?
Or what is your best sequence of painting? were talking about tracked vehicles in this instance.
Check out the painting section in the forum for a lot of information about painting models in general. Paints, techniques, etc.
I have spent time cleaning up parts on models only to cover them up with mud in the end, so I guess it depends on the model each time it could be different how you approach the build.
With German armor (tigers, panthers) you almost have to do it all separately because you can’t paint behind the hidden overlapping areas easily. Even on tanks where the wheels are all open and exposed like a T-55, I have to do them separately to easily paint the black rubber part.
Paint and weather roadwheels seperately. I paint the rubber part of the roadwheel with whatever color I’m using (I like Tamiya Nato Black, it’s a dark gray without being black). Then I come back and spray the ‘center wheel’ using a circle template I bought at Office Max to mask off. Works for me! Some like using Sharpie markers to color the rubber portion of the road wheel, but I’m too wobbly!
I use " tigerman’s " , old fashioned way , spray the wheels , the base coat , then brush paint the tires , it’s always worked for me . Also I use a sharp X- Acto knife , with a # 11 blade , to nick the tires to simulate wear , paying particular attention to the portions of the tires that come in contact with the center guides of the track .
