Hey guys I’m finishing up a Tamiya’s FW-190 A8 kit and I went to paint it in the usual RLM 74/75/76 scheme. I noticed the 75 didn’t seem quite right. I’m using MM Acryl for the RLM 74/75 and the 74 seems pretty much spot on but the 75 seems to light and too purple.
I did a comparison shot the Tamiya kit is on the left and the Hasegawa kit is on the right. I used Lifecolor RLM 75 MM Acryl RLM 74 on that one. Any opinions on which one is the better choice?
I don’t have any experience using this RLM colour yet, but looking at a part chart I have, the kit on the right looks a lot more like the ones I have. The difference between the two colours on the left seems to great. I have noticed with late war German aircraft that colours used can be hard to define.
I would go with your instinct I think.
According to the Monogram Guide to Painting German Aircraft color chip and the colors as they appear on my monitor, it doesn’t look like either one is right, but the one on the right is closer to the chip than the one on the left.
I cant say which one is closer to the real deal but here is how my 74/75 scheme turned out using MM acrylics. There is some pre-shading which may be making it look darker in some places. I also faded the centers a bit with some lightened with white for some color variation.

what source do these color chips come from?
yours looks good. I didn’t pre-shade mine. I guess I got too hasty in trying to finish it. I think I"m gonna mix up the colors and use up my little bit of Tamiya paints. I like the LifeColor shade better and I"d probably use them full time but they’re so expensive. Thanks for your input.
Thanks!! Yeah, looking at all the chips and links that are being posted I do believe the MM 75 looks a bit light. I may darken mine on the next build a bit and then lighten from there. I the meantime I will chalk this one up to sun fading, lol.
the MM Enamel maybe more accurate but if you ever compare the enamel vs acrylic you’ll notice they’re slightly off eventhough they are technically the same color. The RLM 74 looks about spot on to me from what I’ve seen. The 75 looks like a cheap imitation being too light and too purple IMO. I know theres alot of other factors that go into the final shade of a color and maybe i’m just being OCD or nit-picky, but I have too much paint and I’m trying to standardize what brands I use for each project. I don’t think I"ll be using MM Acryl for RLM 75 again.
74/75 in reality had a low contrast between the two colors. RLM 75 was pretty close to neutral gray with a tint of violet. I really like Gunze’s match the best.

Thanks for posting the pic Nathan. I wish the Eagle Editions book was still in print that had the color chips. It would make things so much easier. I have to agree I believe when it comes to RLM colors. Gunze is the most accurate across the board. I try to use Vallejo for most of my painting, their RLM 76 is spot on IMO, but their 74/75 are way too dark. So I had to choose alternatives.
What is the source of that color photo? It almost looks like a computer colored B&W photo judging from the skin tones, among others.

Here’s what I finished last night. I ended up using the MM Acryl colors after all. I think it’ll turn out alright. I still have to go back and paint the ‘Defense of the Reich’ Band’ on the rear fuselage. I think it’ll balance itself out once I do the panel line washes and the shading.
