The posts on this topic are pretty outdated, so I figured I’d ask as an update: What is the very best way to strip off chrome plating without harming the part? I’m trying to strip the plating off the oil pan for my Viper so I can paint it steel; I’ve tried the soaking it in vinegar…for a hour…and got nothing. I’ve read on here about all the chemicals you could use, but I’m curious to know what the very best way is. Thanks!
I’ve used brake fluid, worked like a charm. I’ve also heard simple green will work. But you’ve gotta soak it for longer than an hour.
OK, I bought some of the Westleys Tire Bleach today and…wow…after soaking for 5 minutes, the oil pan is completely white. Now I’m soaking the side pipes and disc brakes so I can custom paint them as well. Westleys is definately the way to go IMHO.
I use Mr Muscle oven cleaner, just put the part(s) to be stripped in a freezer bag, squirt in the oven cleaner, seal bag and leave for 20-30 mins. Then give them a good wash off and away you go.

I use Fantastik Orange Action all purpose cleaner to strip chrome, works great for Revell chrome, get it off in about 3 minutes, though I still find it hard to get chrome plating off older AMT kits, everything I’ve tried for AMT chrome either dosn’t work or takes forever to work
Clorox bleach-takes about 1/2 hour and it’s good to go!
chrometech usa recommends a product by ZEP called INDUSTRIAL PURPLE . they told me that the other things you might want to use , and i,ve used to ,such as SIMPLE GREEN will not completely cut the lacquer that,s used as a base on model chrome parts . i , so far have not had to soak anything more than hour . WARNING !!! this stuff is not kind to skin , so wear gloves and eye protection tankerbuilder
