This might be the first armour kit my son, who is seven, builds. It’d be appropriate, as the first kit I built was 1/48th scale too – an IS-III from Aurora.
It’s great that Tamiya is doing this, 1/35th scale being mostly all done anyway. With all-new toolings, they can correct all the errors in older kits – the asymmetric turret shape on the Tiger is a good example.
Good for you Larry, I hope your son falls in love with it and it starts him down the path of years of model building. I will be looking forward to yours and others 1/48 builds. Do you have any of the others? The Stug and Hetzer caught my eye. I’m still teed at Tamiya for not building a 1/35 Hetzer first. Perhaps they will…
I haven’t seen their new 1/48 kits in person, but the pics I’ve seen look pretty impressive. I build mostly 1/48 Aircraft, but I may be tempted to do a few of these.
That Steve Palffy guy seems to be a mainiac!!! He says he had it built in 4-5 hrs. The initial paint doesn’t look like it took more than a couple hours. Looking forward to his next article on detail painting, washes and drybrushing.
I would have liked to have seen at least one picture with another model or something in it (obligatory hand or arm pic would be nice) next to the 1/48 Sherman to give it a scale comparison.
Did he happen to describe what the track peices looked like? From what I can tell, they looked like individual links. I would like to get this kit, because track links for a sherman are usually a pain in the butt.
Just that 1/48 is kinda an oddball scale for tanks. Armor is mostly 1/72 or 1/35 and I just can’t picture 1/48 in my mind. I’m not complaining, just commenting thats all.
Actually, I know it’s not common but I do like to see people or hands in some photos of 1/72 and 1/35 stuff. It just gives me an idea of the size.
Sounds like a little jewel. I might pick up a few of these new 1/48 offerings, price pending, as my little brother’s been inquiring regarding some armor kits, and I wouldn’t mind him having a go at it.
I myself have really no interest in this scale for armor. Who knows, with tamiya in this game now, it will probably get bigger before it ends, but I do think that it will all be a fad. Then again, I could be completely wrong… [:)]
Why is it that you can’t post something about quarter scale armor without people coming out of the woodwork to condemn the scale? What value does that add to the discussion?
Saying that the scale is not right for armor is obviously condemning the scale.
You can’t post anything here about 1/48th scale, particularly the new Tamiya models, without people writing in saying, “Oh, I’m not interested in that scale. That’s the wrong scale for armour.” The question, again, is why bother posting your lack of interest in something? Worse, why bother to post it every single time a thread about kits in that scale is posted?
People might occasionally opine about the bigness of 1/16th, but I can go up and down this board and find 1/16th scale threads that have not one whisper of comment about that scale supposedly being “too big.” Good luck finding many threads here about 1/148th scale armour where someone doesn’t make a comment about the scale, with Pavlovian reliability. It’s usually multiple comments in each thread.
It’s like some people consider Tamiya switching to 1/48th scale to be a personal insult or something. No one’s coming to anyone’s house to take their 1/35th scale kits away.
Upon reviewing this tread (again), I don’t see where anyone has said that “the scale is not right for armor” or any variation with same meaning. I see “the scale is wrong for ME” or “the scale is too small for ME”, but not “the scale is just plain wrong!”
Apparently, you only want people to post who have positive impressions of this kit. Since I think this kit has serious problems (above and beyond scale!), I will edit out my previous replies and will bother you no more…
Come on, fellas! Let’s not let scale come between us!
Larry, you are right, Tamiya’s choice to focus on 1/48 armor has taken many people aback, and as a result we will surely (and naturally) hear about their displeasure whenever Tamiya’s new series is brought up.
Whenever a topic is brought up, we should expect that people are going to voice their opinions, and this one is certainly a controversial subject. Give modellers some time to get used to the idea, and I’m sure the unfavorable 1/48 Tamiya posts will dwindle.
By the way, the new issue of Armour Modelling is a Tiger special, and features some AMAZING works created with the new 1/48 Tamiya Tigers.
The notion that noticeable detail is forsaken in 1/48 needs to be put to rest, because in these new kits by Tamiya, it most certainly is not.
Also, the notion that the 1/48 kits are simple reductions of Tamiya’s 1/35 kits is simply false.
Larry, Tamiya did indeed correct the Tiger turret’s assymetry problem in the 1/35 kit as well (not just the 1/48 kit).
Right, but I didn’t post this to discuss whether the scale deserves to exist or not. I posted it to share some information about a kit. That was the topic.
It certainly was a surprise to see Tamiya making armor kits in 1/48th scale. I participated in discussions of that topic when that WAS the topic.
But posting some obligatory “I don’t like 1/48th scale” comment in every single post concerning the scale, particularly in a thread where the poster just wants to talk about the kit, not the scale, doesn’t seem like very friendly behavior.
It’s funny that this is a hobby, but people still feel this strong urge to poop in other people’s Rice Krispies about so many things – “the color is wrong, you left off a bolt under the left doohicky, that’s the wrong chassis number for the battle of Doofygrad, you’ve built in a scale I do not prefer.”
Thing is, I haven’t built a single one of the new 1/48th scale kits. I’m not some partisan of the scale – I’m just posting info on a new kit!
Sorry Larry, I guess I didn’t make my point very well.
Simply put, whatever the topic, people will state their opinions, positive or negative. That’s simply the nature of forums (actually, I thought that was the PURPOSE of forums!). Whether it was your intention here for people to share their opinions or not, people are going to share. Post it, and they will comment.
What did you expect? Just a bunch of “Thanks for the links, Larry!” with nary a comment? (Thanks, by the way. They were cool links!)
With all due respect, I think you may be overreacting a bit here to what is simply a natural function of forums in general.
