Revell's B-52 Kit

Has anyone ever built this kit? Is it a good buy? How are the details, and how long does it take to put together?

I assume you mean the 1/72 kit?

It’s an old Monogram kit, raised panel lines, not very much detail, but sufficient.

As for how long it takes to build, I haven’t got a clue. That really depends on who’s building it.

It is an excellant kit and a marvelous buy. The details are good and go together quite nicely. As for time… let’s just say don’t rush and fill in all of the seams and paint it right.

Hey, are you talking about this oldie?

I had about 5 of these as a kid, and recently picked another one up a couple of months ago for a “nostalgia build.”

It’s an old, simple kit, but man-o-man does it bring back memories! [:)]

I have the Monogram “Big Bad & Beautiful” B-52D kit somewhere… that might be the same one.
If you find any AM detail for it lemme know. I’ve been trying to find a detail kit for the tail turret & bomb bay (I want to do it in a Cold War config) but haven’t had any luck so far.

Oh MAN!!! I completely forgot about this kit until I saw the picture!! Talk about MEMORIES!! What a great kit…Whre in the WORLD did ya find it???

I am talking about the new kit, it is still in production, and it is very large.

Down at an LHS that specializes in used kits.
Here’s a link, click around and see all the old goodies!

Matt90, if it’s a big 'un you’re talking about, and it’s still in production, then you’re talking about the 1/72 Revell/Monogram (originally just Monogram) kit.
Nice big kit. Built two of them when I was a kid. I’m just about to jump into more BUFF-mania with a 1/72 AMT/ERTL B-52G late version.

Welcome to FSM, by the way! [:D]

Thank you. So it is worth the $40?

The 1/72 Revell/Monogram B-52D?
Yeah, I’d say it’s worth it.

I built it several years ago when I was relatively new to the hobby… I got mine at Hobby Lobby I think. I would buy another one if I had space to put it. I remember it as a great kit that went together easily, even for a young builder.

For the updates and detailing stuff, you might want to check out www.greatmodels.com I seem to remember them having some BUFF stuff.

Hmph…Now I wanna buld another buff…thanks guys.

I built it 15 years or so ago. It’s big. I enjoyed it, though I don’t recal too many specifics other than I was really disappointed with the bomb bay, all it had was a cheesy little styrene plate with some half bombs molded onto it. I think they might have corrected that by now though.

I have built three of them so far and several more to go. The bomb bay definately lacks detail and the landing gear bays are also pretty sparse. The thing is big enough that there is plenty of room to scratch build added detail. I found some 72 scale 50 cal machine guns in the scrap box and put them in the tail turret to replace the “stick” that are there. I also cut out the shell ejector ports on the bottom. I cut the lower radome off the nose of one and scratch built the radar antenna and assorted wiring and boxes. I also added the KA-18 BDA camera just aft of the back landing gear bay.
It is a pretty good kit overall. The flaps are a bit flaky, but they look good in the extended position. I bought a set of the True Detail resin wheels that are “flattened” to simulate a fully loaded aircraft, but didn t use them. They are way TOO flat. Even loaded, the tires barely flatten out at all.

I have 2 of them in my build pile with conversion sets to make one an H and the other one a NASA X-15 launch vehicle. Now just need the Monogram X-15 kit and the decals.

Got one today for my birthday, the bombs in the hole are still lumps on a plate [xx(]

Crud. Well, since I don’t really want to tackle one in 72nd now anyway, maybe I’ll look at one of the smaller kits.

Squadron has been advertising a new 1/72 B-52H model in a pre-buy status for a while. Does anyone know if it is out yet, I think it’s an R/M kit? I want it BADLY!

That B-52H has been on the pre-order page for over a year now and the way AMTech is going, it’ll be there another year at least. I really want this kit as well but I’m going to hold my breath.

I believe there has been an article about this kit in an FSM issue a couple of years ago, I’ll try to find the correct issue.
