Revell S-100 Class W.I.P. **Update 2/28**

Well, my bosses keep telling me about being diverse in the workplace and all so I thought I would go a step further. Up until now I have only built armor and aircraft but as of late I have had a hankering for something that floats. I have several kits in the stash but most are 700th and 350th scale. When the opportunity came up to grab this kit for 15 bucks, I jumped on it and immediately ordered the Eduard PE set for it. This is quite a good sized kit. Now I am no rivet counter and wouldn’t know enough about them to count them if I were so this is basically being built as is without an corrections (I know there are some faults but to be honest, I dont know what they are). I plan on opening up all those exhaust ports and water intake ports on the hull as well as opening one of the forward torpedo hatches and having a fish take a peek. I will be modeling the S-204 Lang. She will be in schnellbootweis with the decks in plain deck grey and the dark grey lower hull. Here are some progress shots, have patience with me as this thing does not fit in my photo booth and I adjust my camera to deal with the room lighting.

As always, comments and input are more than welcome as this is my first ship ever!!

looking good…[tup]

Very nice indeed, keep the photos coming. I love watching builds in progress.

cheers,

Julian

Just wanted to add that the Revell instructions have you install the torpedo tube loading doors on wrong. All the refs I have show them opening to the outside however the destructions have you install them opening to the inside. The deck is primed on my eboat and I am drilling out and modifying the exhaust ports and intake ports on the hull as I type this. Will hopefully get some picks up soon.

On my Revell S-100 I stuck pieces of sprue on the inside of the exhaust and coolingwater outlets so that I could drill them through from the outside. Gives a sense of depth to the vents.

Cheers,

Julian

Thanks for the tip Julian! I drilled mine out at a slight angle which I think gave them a bit more depth than just drilling them straight through. I think I am just going to glue some thin cardstock on the inside and let it ride as they add quite a bit of dimenson to it as is.

One question though, there are small circlular porst above the exhaust ports and above the water line. I am assuming that these are bilge ports?? If so, should they all be drilled as well?? There are 3 on one side and 2 on the other. My refs show some of them pretty clearly as pumping water but I cant find a good pic of the others.

Here is the deck before priming with all torpedo racks on. I think Eduard was ingeniuos how they designed these in PE!!

And after a coat of rattle can flat black…

And the drilled intake and exhaust ports…

More to come, thanks for dropping by…

Got some more work done on the deck tonight. I decided on Tamiyas German Grey XF-63 lightened with a few drops of white to represent deck grey. Not sure if the pics show it clearly but went with an uneven coat to show wear. I plan to enhance the high traffic areas of the deck later to show a bit more wear than other areas.

I drilled those through as well (yes, bilge ports).

Your build is coming along nicely but aren’t the deckhouses too dark? (and after weathering things tend to get darker still).

cheers,

Julian

Thanks J for looking. I havent painted the deckhouses yet. From what I can tell, they are suppose to be schnellbootweis. That will be my next step,

Doh…Sorry, just me being impatient [:I]

Julian

Lol, no prob J.This being my first boat, its going slower than I thought it would. Do you have any pics of your Revell S-100?? Was it finished as Lang also?? Feel free to post them here if you dont mind, I would love to see it.

I never finished the Revell S-100. I wasn’t trying to do the “Lang” but went for the three colour camouflage (that was never painted on 100 series boat anyway) and armed with airbrushes, several pots of paint and a jar of maskol I set out to do the camo. Things sort of went from bad to worse and the maskol fought the paint all the way. The model moved into the storage room, sat there for about a year until I changed my hobby room. I decided the S-100 was going nowhere and was looking pretty dreadful waiting to get there so I threw the build into the garbage can (along with some "ugly sisters"that I did not post here [swg]). The remaining parts went into the sparebox. Luckily not one of the most expensive kits and it taught me an awful lot about maskol [banghead].

cheers,

Julian

Oh wow, didnt mean to dredge up some old sad memories [(-D]. I think Revell did a fine job with this kit!

The Revell model is good, my paint job sucked.[swg]

Thanks Julian and MR.

Got a little bit of work done on the sboot this evening. While dry fitting the deck, I discovered there was a small gap that just would not do on the where the deck meets the transom. A couple of pieces of .02 x.04 strip later and you’d never know it was there!

Doh, got a little click happy and clicked post instead of preview…

Anywho, got the deck gap filled and started working on the open torpedo tube. After digging around the house to find a suitable plastic tube that would simulate the eel’s home, I came up with a medicine dropper that comes with childrens Advil. May be kinda hard to see in the pics as it is clear. Using a Dremel, I hollowed out the tube ends very carefully.

Will post some more tonight, hoping to get the hull primed and painted as soon as I finish with this tube. Thanks for taking a peek and as usual, all thoughts and comments are welcome!

Sweet…that eel looks mean poking outta that tube…

Nice work on the tubes Jester ! I am planning on putting one fish in a tube (gives an idea of how big they are if you look in through the tube doors), one fish half way in a tube and of course the two spare fish in the rails on deck.Keep the photos coming.

cheers,

Julian [tup]

More work done on the boat today, been a fairly good weekend for modelling!! Started working on the propulsion. This would round out the hull and would enable me to go ahead and get it primed.

Once finished with the lower hull, it was time for the flat black primer…

Got to admit, this is one sleek mean looking machine!! Now on to a mission in Silent Hunter III and hopefully I wont get rammed by a Clemson class destoyer and sink this time!!! Thanks for stopping in!
