Revell-Monogram kits worth getting

wingy thingies

floatie thingies

wheelie thingies

klankie thingies

Lotta good stuff…I recently purchased their 1/32 German 8 wheel armored car kit …after looking over the kit, I’m sorta sorry I never picked up more of those Monogram 1/32 armor kits[:'(]

…maybe the next swap meet…[^o)]

when I got back into the hobby I was shocked to see there was no more monogram armor. I grew up on ranch and there was a armor battle out there just about every day I build built everything monogram had a dozen times. It was a odd scale

Mississippi…I think it is back out it sold as the older blue Angel kit and it also can be decaled as u.s. marines

MV, the A-4 was recently re issued and is currently available. It has marking options for the Blue Angels, or John McCain’s Scooter on USS Forrestal (from which he barely escaped during the catastrophic fire).

Spruce & Black Dog, they have been re issuing the armor slowly. Most recently were the Kfz 232, M4 Hedge Hog, M3 Lee, and M48. I would really love to see them re issue all the Panzer IV variants that they did with the Shep Paine flyers. And their M3 Grant…

I recall seeing the Sherman box on the shelves at Michaels Craft store but didn’t pick it up because I had never actually seen the kits; the German 8 wheel armored car I bought for $2 recently is the first kit I have actually examined.
Unless I happen to see Monogram armor kits in the very few remaining Chicago area hobby shops, I will check for them at local swap meets this year.

The Sherman’s when released were great. But they compromised on some details by using the lower hull and suspension from the earlier M3 kits. Both the M4 and M4A1 are initial production types with direct vision on the hull, although the M4A1 has the later M34A1 full width mantelet on the main gun. Both need correction in the rear hull/ exhaust, and the tracks have the end connectors molded in the wrong spot. They are not up to speed compared to the Tasca or latest Dragon Shermans. But you can get 2 to 3 for the price of one of those. And if you like 1/32 and “fixer uppers” they can be fun. Monogram also did the M8 and M20 armored cars. The M8 has not been available for many many years.

OH YEAH!!! Count me in for sure!

I love these kits for a couple of reasons…1) they are relatively inexpensive. When I screw them up, I’m not out much. 2) the memories. That is about all I built as a kid.

I am becoming more and more aware, at a not insignificant cost, that it isn’t the kit, but the builder. That is almost always the case. It isn’t the material, but the skills of the builder/artist.

And, their customer service on replacement parts is just about second to none.

I have the original Pro Modeler issue 410 and is a real beauty and can be built OOB as is. Another decent kit that opens up superdetaling possibilities is the old TBD. Fermis did a thread a while back on this :http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/128955.aspx?PageIndex=1

As I remember when I did the 1/48 P38, it was a real dog and I wound up tossing it. Don’t know about the 1/32 one. I have Three 1/48 Monogram P51Ds that show a partial engine, gun bay details and super crisp cockpit molded detail. They should make excellent builds.

I have been eyeing the 1/32 Tony on Ebay but they have been selling for $100+. I heard this is an excellent kit.

Thanks for that info on the kits. [:D][Y]
If I can buy kits at a swap meet for a low enough cost, they would make good projects for weathering.
I notice Hobby Lobby is selling the US Army OD Vallejo AFV Painting and Weathering kits and may try one of these paint sets on the kits just for practice.

The Catalinas are good kits, the A-10 for the money is the best out there, the F9F builds up nicely as does A-1

the F-4 is pretty good as well.

Stikpusher when MM III starts count me in

I keep for getting michaels art & craft. The last time I was in there they had a bunch of revell p51 and huey copter and air cobra to many to list. There was a wall full. good selection of ships cars truck ext.

How could I have forgotten about the F9F and the Sandy, both excellent kits.

Thanks all for your answers !

I knew those Revell - Monogram kits were popular, but not THAT much ! [;)]

I must tell you that I’ve never completed a 1/48 scale aircraft yet (tried to build the TBF Avenger, also from Revell - Monogram, but had lots of problems fitting the wings that I put the kit away for now … [:@] )

I’ve narrowed my choices a bit, and here they are :

Mosquito Mk IV RCAF
Pro : one of my top fav fighter of WWII ! Con : a bit on the pricey side of the cheap scale

Hawker Typhoon Mk IB
Pro : cool looking fighter Cons : I read online people telling about some fit issues (is it true ?)

P-39 Airacobra
Pro : cool looking, easy paint scheme Cons : I already have the Academy kit of this plane in 1/72 scale

Bf-109 G-10
Pro : I read online about it’s ease of assembly Cons : complicated paint scheme

I have till next Friday to decide …

You might try searching for reviews on each kit (not only on Finescale Modeler) to help decide.

The Mosquito is (probably) a re-issue of the Monogram kit, and it has some shape issues with the tail-planes and spinners (and probably a few other areas). It’s definitely not the most accurate of the Mosquito kits, but still builds up into a very nice model. Depends on how important accuracy is to you.

I have two in the stash and will build one out of nostalgia someday.

The Avenger is apparently not a 1:48 scale aircraft, but closer to 1:50 to 55 scale. I bought one recently for the decals, as it was cheaper to buy the kit than a decal sheet!

My last two builds were Monogram P-47s, and they’re great kits.

Gary

I have two Typhoons currently in my stash, but have not built one in over 30 years, so I can not address any fit issues firsthand…

The 109G-10 is a similar story- I built it originally when it was first released by Revell (it is an original Revell modling from when the two companies were very seperate) back in the late 70s. Again I have one in my stash yet to be built. May I ask what you find complicated about the paint scheme? Usually the kits come with more than one marking option/paint scheme choice.

My Mossie built straigh OOB with Aeromaster decals- looks like a Mossie to me

My Airacobra, with some Ultracast exhaust stacks, Ultracast seat, Cutting Edge Decals. This kit has really held up well for 40+ years.

If you are concerned about price, I suggest you that if there is a Hobby Lobby near you, you look at their selection with their 40% off coupon. I do not know if Michaels ( I believe that is the store that you mentioned where you saw these kits) offers a similar discount, but if they do…[whstl]

Great looking builds stick!

Misssissippivol, I just bought two off ebay - 1976-1977 era. PM me if you want one.

Yes Michael’s offers 40% off coupons as well as 25% off entire transactions, usually more often than hobby lobby…I don’t know if they’re doing it anymore either but when I worked there a couple years back if you gave them your email they’d give you a 40% off on the spot.

Thats good info to have Josiah. Thank you. I went to our local Hobby Lobby yesterday and they had the Revell P-47N on clearance. Too bad I already have the Academy N in my stash, and was more tempted by the Academy 1/35 MH-60 (incorractly labeled as a AH-60) also on clearance. There is a Micheals nearby as well…
