Revell (Germany?) RAF Phantom - accuracy/ issues?

I picked up a 1/48 Revell(Germany) RAF Phantom at a LHS ( the Fresno Hobbyland USA -My first kit bought in the States in almost 5 years![:D]) The kit was discounted because it was missing the decals. I searched thru the shop’s decals & found a SuperScale “Smokers” sheet for RAF Phantoms.[8D] Later that nite I was looking over the decal sheet & the kit/box itself and noticed that the fin on the kit Phantom is very different from the Marks on the sheet. [:0] Now, I don’t have a SS “In Action” or “Walkaround” yet, but I was wondering if I was in for some serious correction work?[}:)] - Calvin

Depends on the Phantom 90% of British phantom are FGR1 or 2 , the tail section is totaly different as the fuselage and underside (to accomodate the spey engines)
the early FGR’S Had a similar tail section to the F4J , but then changed it to accomodate the radar or some IDS gizmo, so they have a oblong top ,
sounds like the kit you have is a early FGR
We did have only 15 F4J(UK)'S they flew with the 74 SQD
check out this site it may help

this is a FGR2 note the tail

this is a F4J(UK) earlier fgr’s had a similar tail

The R/G kit is the Hasegawa kit. I think the cockpits on their Brit F-4s are better than their other Phantoms. British F-4s had a rectangular RWR pod mounted on the fin tip later in their careers. Is that what you’re talking about? I think the kit has both fin tips.

Thanks a bunch, fellas! Very nice site, too! I really didn’t dig into the kit, so I hope I do have a new fin tip. That means more posibilities for markings! LOL - Calvin

lodni_k,
I was raised in Fallon, Nevada. Its been about 5 years since I have been there.

I very much doubt ANYTHING has changed, Jim! Except for some personnel at the NAS and the fact that NSWC doesn’t have Tomcats anymore! LOL
