I’m a new modeler, but have bought and started several models. I have realized that there seems to be a difference in the quality of models even from the same manufacturer, especially Revell-Monogram. I’m sure all of you experienced modelers already know this, but I was surprised. Since I’m new to modeling and don’t want to shell out big bucks on starter kits I stick to the cheapies. I just wanted to ya’ll know that the Revell-Germany P-47D-30 1:72 is a really nice cheap model. The detail is very nice compared with others I have bought. The fit is fantastic. I didn’t have to put any filler. I purchased a Revell-Germany F6F Hellcat 1:72 and the detail isn’t even close. The fit sucks too, in comparison.
Can ya’ll list some other cheap “gems” that you have experienced like this one?
RM’s 1:48 Zero is $8 at wally world at home. Ain’t built it but the dry fit is nearly seamless with it staying somewhat together without glue. rrrrrrrooooo!!
I saw that one this past weekend. It, along with the Bf-109. I picked up the 109, but the detail is kinda lacking. But not bad for the price. At least it has recessed panel lines. Didn’t the Zero have raised panel lines?
I thought it had raised rivit heads. been a while since I looked. could have. I have 1 to rescibe, might be it. The curse of having so many. can’t keep 'em straight.
The varying Quality of kits is often a question of age. Revell/Monograms P-47-D is a fairly new tooling, while some of the kits still around were tooled several years ago when mold technology and modellers demands were less exacting. Also, a lot of manufacturers simply re-box kits originally released by other manufacturers and these can also vary widely in quality. If you are a 1/72 scale fan, Revell/Monogram also offer good kits of the P-51-B, Bf-109-G-10, Spitfire Mk V, and Hurricane. Also check out some of Acadamys’ newer kits which are as good or better than RevellMonogram. They make a very nice P-51-B, F-84, F6-F-3/5 Hellcat, Tempest, Typhoon and several others at reasonable cost. Many of Hasegawas’ kits are very nice, but there is a wide range of quality since they continue to sell some pretty old too;ings. Check before you buy, but thir Zero family are very good as are their FW-190 and Bf-109’s. All of Tamiya’s 1/72 scale kits are about as good as you can buy, but they are more expensive.

Agree on that. Most of my 1/72 are either Academy or Revell.
