Revell DC-8

Here’s the old Revell 1/144 DC-8 converted into a DC-8-71. I used a set of resin engines which were very crude and needed lots of clean up and shaping. I lost the original landing gear so I used a set of gear salvaged from an old Airfix VC-10. All the decals came from the now defunct ATP airliner. I’ve had the kit for several years and finally finished it. It’s finished in model master acrlyic fueselage and tail. The wings are Aclad aluminum and light gray inspars with pastel weathering. Please enjoy.

Thank you, Neil

Hey, great build!

When did Revell make a DC-8? I never knew they did. Have you checked out Minicrafts new DC-8/71??? Absolutely amazing kit they produced if you love the DC-8 like I do. Ok, Sorry for the hijack.

I love the Condor colors!! Go old School, or Go Home!

Thank you for the nice comments. I have seen the box art for the new DC8 and have heard it’s wonderful but I’ve seen no reviews. Have you? This is an OLD Revell kit [xx(] circa, 1970’s? kit. I bought it from ATP airliner for about 20.00 back in 2000-2001.

Neil

Thats nice.

I also remember ATP airliner. Bought a few things from them also.

I have that same kit, unbuilt.

Was there a -63, and a -71?

I think I have both kits, as the DC-8 was my first airliner to fly in, back in 1976 with “Capitol” airlines.

I might even have decals for that line.

Man, I need to getta building!

Cheers,

Leon.

I haven’t seen any reviews yet, but I have bought 6 of the kits:) They’re amazing. It looks like they tried out a new plastic, almost like the plastic on Hellers DC-6/7’s. The detail is outstanding. They have every panel line, inspection panel, the flaps, and rudder are more detailed and then vents are actually opened.

The airplane fits together with no flaws. I checked 4 of my kits just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. I used VERY little gap filler, and that was on the leading edge of the wings only because I “slid” them on accident after glueing.

They have gone all out on decals. They have decals to add more detail to the engines, engine pylons and others to list.

They really have outdone themselves, and I think high enough of the kit to buy 6 of them at $40 a piece.

Rumor has it they will come out with other DC-8 versions. I have spoke with Russel of www.airliner-hobby.com and he says other airlines decals will be out soon for the DC-8…otherwise you’re stuck with a fleet of all Delta’s.

disclaimer: No I do not work for minicraft or have any family/friends who work for them. I just hope that all their kits will continue to be like this one. I also happen to LOVE the DC-8, so yes I am excited about this kit.

Now I really want to get my hands on the new Minicraft Kit! BTW I got a chance to fly in a Air Afrique DC-8 from Tenerif Canary Islands to Madrid Spain back in Summer of 1975. My Dad was stationed in Mauritania West Africa and we lived in Majorca Spain. I remember is being quite tall and very comfortable. It seemed to have a bit more room than the B707(which I flew on many times). A nice ride and very powerful engines. Great fun, great memories.

Neil

Hey, my hat is off to Minicraft for all the great airliners they have been introducing. After reading this topic I will definitely have to acquire one of their DC-8’s.

One of my most memorable flights was on a DC-8 from Dallas to Atlanta on Delta. We crossed a spring squall line that stretched as far as the eye could see on either side of the plane. It was awesome - and ROUGH. Tough aircraft. Come to think of it, the baby next to me squalled all the way too. A trip of squalls.

I really miss Airliners ATP. Usually when you called you got the owner himself. He was a great source of information if you were looking for something particular. I remember one evening when I called at the last minute he spent a good half hour on the phone with me, and in the end talked me out of the kit I was going to order (poor quality). Now THAT was service.

Amen to Airliner ATP. I ordered a set of decals, correguard for the Revell B747 1/144 scale and he sent me two sets and only charged for one! They did have great service.

I do like the latest Minicraft airliners. I want to do a B707 but hesitate to buy one because I’m s not too sure about the quality and detail. I did the electra and Connie and was not too impressed.

Neil

I stay away from their propliners because of the quality. 1/144 is just too small to make a propliner model. I have had bad luck with a few of their 757’s, especially the American Airlines retro paint job. A lot of large gaps, and bad fitting. Same goes with the American Airlines 777.

I haven’t had a bad expierence with any of the 707’s though.

I built their DC-4/C-54 “Candy Bomber” about a year ago and was very pleased with it. I just bought their C-121. It has decals for two different cargo versions, but includes the upper and lower radomes for the EC-121 or R7V-1. There are no specific decals for either of radar versions, but generic markings and a tail number would get it done.

I was at the hobby shop last night reading the latest to be released by Minicraft. Dc-8’s in United, Eastern and Southern Air Transport.

Others are Western 727, Yellow Bird 727, Delta md-80 and a few others I can’t remember.

Neil,
That looks pretty good, mate. I like it…I’m one of them oddball type modellers that like (gasp - horror!!) airliners.
Nice looking conversion - well done and thanks for sharing.
And the guys are right - have a look at some of the Minicraft models…they make some simply incredible airline models - they’re great.
Cheers, brother!

Great job on the weathering - just enough to give it that “lived in look” while still maintaining the anal retentive cleanness of most airliners.

Thanks for the nice comments. I’ve got the Minicraft B777 unbuilt and I just completed the MD80 in Spirit livery. I just picked up the Revell of Germany B737-800 and I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of my EL AL,current scheme, decals I ordered from F-Decal. They look fantastic. The kit looks like a gem. I’m also working on an Aviasa B737 using the old Airfix kit. I’ll post some in progress pics soon.

I’m an airliner freak since I was a kid. I used to live in Majorca SPain, back in 1975 and I’d ride my Montesa motor bike out to the airport with back pack strapped to my back loaded with a camera, binoculars, a bag lunch and lots of time. I’d sit and watch all the planes landing and taking off. It’s was great since Majorca is a major tourist attraction so there was lots to see. I also used to collect airplane post cards and hang them all over my room…sorry, going down memory lane…oh I miss the days when the had observation decks! Mmm the smell of JP4 in the morning[8D]
