Revell Corsair problem..

IMHO, When it’s on the ground or flight deck, the F4U Corsair looks best when everything is hangin’ out, down & dirty as it were… Cowl and wing flaps wide open… BUT: Much as I hate to admit it, my scratchbuilding skills haven’t been up to the job of reconstructing the flaps for the Revell 1/32 scale F4U… At least not to the level I call acceptable…

I’ve seen resin sets of flaps for the Otaki Corsair in 1/48th, and I imagine there’s a set that’ll work for about all the 1/48th birds, but does anyone know of a resin set for the Revell bird? Having already cut out the flaps out, I’m kinda committed to the build as it is, so any help would be appreciated…

Try LONESTAR. I know they have a set for 1/32. Maybe they have 1/48…Harv

Some people have used pop can aluminum for the cowl flaps, but better have your gloves handy to protect your hands.

Good day Hans,
Hannants (UK) have this on their site.
http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=PAVU4814
Not sure if it’s what you need, but it does quote it’ll do the Hasegawa and Revell kits.
As it’s from Pavla there may well be other sources to aquire it from.
All the best,
Mick C.

Totally agree that if an F4U is on the ground, the more “unhinged” it looks, the better. I did the dropped flap number on a 48th Hasegawa -4 some time ago and can vouch for the fact that it was a bugger getting all six sections in place and even. Those center bits with the gull of the wing involved were quite memorable, both in cobbling them up and fitting them into their spots in the wing.

I hope the resin gods can come to your rescue, Hans. If not, believe it can be done with some patience, epoxy putty and sheet styrene. “I can do this, I can do this, I can do this, I can…”

Hans - If I was facing this I would take a piece of balsa “Trailing edge” stock - a nice steep triangle stock comparable to the shape of a 60* drafting triangle . Make the flaps out of that as it is easy to cut, sand and is already in the basic shape. You could scale them down enough to cover them with the neighbors plastic " For Sale" sign even …

This balsa trailing edge stock can be found at most hobby shops that carry R/C stuff. If you do not have one near - drop me a PM and I will more then happy to mail you some …

Anything is possible when your a Scratch Builder ! [tup]

I think I got it whipped… I used some sprue and the kit parts… Gonna take some sanding and filling and a little bit of hardware here & there, but it just might work this way…

Thank for the help though… Gonna keep them mind on the next Revell Corsair I do… This one’s gonna be a VMF 214 bird, but I still want to do a Navy Corsair as well…

Hans,

I’m finishing up an old 1/48 Revell F4U-4 and gave up on the flaps. I had them cut out, couldn’t get’em to look right when I tried dropping them, and glued them back in place. Out of curiosity, were the flaps on the corsair always dropped when the AC was parked? I read somewhere that this was done to relieve the hydraulic pressure in the system to avoid leaks. But…I also read, and I can’t remember where, that corsairs which were on the ready line kept the hyd. pressure up so there would be no delay in getting airborne.
