Revell Bf109 G-10

I just finished this bf109 a few days ago. I used Tenax for the first time on this, and I gotta say that I really like the stuff![tup] It helped me avoid some seam filling that I would have had to do otherwise. I’m still working on my weathering skills, so don’t slam me too hard![:D] I also left off the tank because apparantly, it wasn’t designed to be stepped on.[D)]

The paint scheme is allover RLM 76 (as per the instructions) using the kit decals. The decals were terrible…almost as thick as a playing card. Tookat least 4 soakings of decal set and some pushing with a toothpick to get them to settle. Otherwise, it is a fun and easy kit.

Thanks for looking and all comments/criticisms welcome![:D]

From whatI can see she looks good. Those lighter color can be a challange to weather, but you did a good job. The exhaust stains look excellent as does the panel line wash. The mechine gun stains are a bit dark but not bad. 109’s were big time oil leakers and you got some nice staining on the underside as well. I have seen many pics where the whole bottom of the 109 is black including the tail. I don’t think you can over weather the bottom of a 109.

Custom by Crunch on the tank, huh?

Looks pretty good, I haven’t seen that scheme before. The canopy frame looks a bit wide, but I probably only noticed it because the canopy on the Brewster Buffalo I’m building right now is driving me nuts.

Nice build Max. I’ve never seen an overall RLM76 scheme in any reference, but Revell couldn’t be wrong, could they ?

Regards, Rick

Interesting paint and marking scheme. The only Revell G-10 I’ve seen is the one in JG300 DoR markings with regular late war brown/green camo. The way I got it was that as the Luftwaffe moved farther and farther into the forests for protection and cover, they dumped the greys for a more “woodsy” pattern. With the G-10 being a pretty late variant, I’m surprised by that overall lichtblau scheme. They didn’t leave the factory like that, did they?

Where did your kit originate? Was it some sort of re-box or Euro version?

David… The box art was for the more “woodsy” camo scheme identified as II./JG 27 Schleswig-Holstein, Marz 1945, but I used the alternate scheme III./JG 1 Anklam, November 1944. I had never seen an allover RLM76 either, so I thought I’d give it a shot. As for the canopy, I had to guess where to mask as there were only rivets showing.[:D]

From the pics, it looks like a well done build. Nice finish and weathering. Tenax is a great product and smells good too!

Nice work on that -109! I like you exhaust stains- very nice.

I am not positive about G-10’s but I know for a fact other marks of 109’s were painted in overall RLM 76, primarily those used as high-altitude interceptors, recon or weather birds (seen some plates of JG 1 and JG 11 birds in overall 76)…I did a G-6 w/ a heavy mottle of 76 that is well documented:

[#ditto] I have a decal set in 1/32 for a mostly RLM66 G-6. Excellent work Max, is the spinner spiral a decal too, it looks painted on!

I can’t say off the top of my head if JG 27 operated 109’s in that camo but I do know that JG 3 did as well as some night fighter units. My guess would be that they did from where they were operating at the time the G-10 would be used. Again this is a guess. And yes they did paint G-10’s in mono tone RLM 76.

…good point about NF’s…after about late '43 it was found that 76 worked better than darker colors and black for night camo…and as I said before, it seems that high-altitude fighters and recon planes also sometimes got the lighter scheme…even some bombers…

I recall reading somewhere that Goering insisted on early Me-109’s being painted in overall light blue as he reckoned that

A. THey would spend more time in the air than on the ground.

B. The war would soon be over.

Ive seen phtos of Emils being field painted in camo colors after arriving at the front. I just thought that the camo thing was standard for them. Again, no matter what you know, it’s subject to change.

Good looking 109 Max [tup]

And just think…I thought it was just a winter scheme because of the date![banghead] This is why this forum is so great. I always learn something when I read these![:D]

Phoenix…where do you get those side shots of camo schemes?

Daywalker…thanks for the compliment on the spinner, but it is a decal…a real pain in the @$$ decal![:D]

Nice Gustav!Here is my 1/32 Revell G-6

That one most likely from a book, from which one exactally I’m not sure. The subject of rlm 76 109 has come up in the past and I had it already saved to my pc. I believe I have 2 or 3 color plates of mono colored 109’s.

I have 2 books that have color plates for modelers. these plates are rendering from actual photo’s that have been gone over. Basically they did the work for you so you don’t have to squink and blow up old BW photos to see what you want. That 109 pic is not one of these as they show all flaws and weathering present on the original photo.

If you are interesting in what book I got it from let me know and I’ll hunt it up.
