Greetings!
The Type VIIC U-Boat has metal railings forward of the conning tower and smaller railings aft of the tower. Photos show the railings connected but by what I cannot tell. Does anyone know was there a pair of metal cables on each side connecting the railings or simply rope connecting the two.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The railings were different on different boats and at different times, I think about 2 or 3 variations on the base. Div 6 is right, go to the AMP site and in the Library you will find to great docs by Dougie Martindale.
The part you’re talking about was wire cable, but there’s more in in the library.
What boat are you building?
The AMP site is fantastic and contains TONS of detailed info. Each shipyard and boat was different in one way or another, two were never the same. I have built several in 1/72 and one recently in 1/144 that will hopefully be a future article on FSM magazine. I highly recommend the useof PE detail setswhich will super detail your build. The brass railings really do a lot in bringing things down to scale since the plastic ones are a bit thicker. Also consider drilling and opening up the flood holes for even greater realism. If you are almost done with yours, consider adding the PE next time.

I have made steel cables for both sides using the info on the AMP site. And yes the boat is fully rigged with PE, drilled out all flooding holes, wooden deck, cloth flag, aluminum periscopes and metal gun barrels, brass propellors and yankee modelworks pressure hull (can hardly be seen but what the heck). Just finishing weathering (light) and rigging. Working on replacement for the insulators in the kit.
