Revell 1/72 Scale U -Boat

Hello ! I normally build Armor models. But I am building this kit for a friend . How does it measure up , to be a " Straight Out of the Box " , build ? And also the color scheme for this boat ? I am looking to model it like the the boat , featured in the classic movie , " Das Boot " . Plus I also have a conning tower crew for it .Thanks !

Hi Frank,

It’s a pretty good build. There are a few incorrections, but to most, they wouldn’t notice. At 3ft long, it’s pretty impressive.

As for the color scheme, the color for the upper hull and conning tower is Hellgrau 50. The lower hull is Schiffsbodenfarbegrau. Basically a light grey and dark grey scheme. I get the paint from WEM. They sell u-boat paints that are as close to accurate as the real thing.

Take a look at mine. I also build them for other people.

Jess,

That looks VERY SHARP Great Job, hope mines comes out that well. My problem is that it does not have a lot of rigging ;).

BTW can you email me with the source for the paints?

Jake

Jake, you got mail ; )

Why did you redo the anchor position on your U-253? Also why did you rework the torpedo doors?

I moved the anchor recess forward for two reasons. First, after studying photos, I recognized that the anchor recess is much closer to the torpedo doors and the upper forward flood holes. Second, and quite obviously, in reality, the anchor would crash down on the hydroplane arm if left in the kit’s placement.

As far as torpedo doors go, they are too long. The aft end of the doors should be directly in line with the flood holes above each door. Again, this is from looking at photos over and over.

I also corrected the size of the round, upper forward flood holes. As well as the forward most flood holes. These were lowered and resized with 3 on port and 2 on starboard.

Hope this helps.

Jess

Modelbuilder,

You don’t happen to live in Gastonia, NC?

If so, I’m from Lincolnton. I went to Gaston Community College. I live in Philly right now, but I’m planning to move back to Charlotte this Fall.

Jess
