So I bought this kit a few days ago for 18.00 dollars. I was confused though. The number was yellow 23 with red stars and yellow outlines. I thought all soviet stars were red with white outline?
Any Idea? Secondly what does the color of the number mean? I know there is Blue and Red. Never seen a yellow number set before.

Maybe the decal sheet yellowed with age?
Occasionally Soviet stars would be seen with a yellow outline but that was not too common. Bort numbers have been seen in red, blue, black, white, yellow, and various combinations of. The individual colors may have some meaning, but I have never read of any system similar to one like the Luftwaffe had in WWII to denote squdron within a wing.
So if I painted the plane bare metal with these decals would it throw it off? I know that bare metal planes that I usually have seen are with the white outlines. The plane itself is supposed to be dark green on top with light blue underneath. I was wondering if they added the yellow to tone down the outline.
Just pleading the case or I am going to have to fine new decals.
Hmmmm, I dont think those markings will match a NMF Mig. The Dark Green over Lt Blue sounds like it may be a flight demonstration team and that would explain the Yellow Star outlines and Bort numbers.
Well now i am in a pickle. I take it red would be a better color bort number with white outlines for a nmf. So in that being said do you know where I can find some nice 1/48 scale decals. Two bobs seems to be amazing but the items i need our sold out.

According to one of my sources, the outlines were indeed supposed to be painted white “officially” after VE day in 1945 in all VVS units… However, some squadrons applied a yellow outline to their insignias, a practice that first started during the “Great Patriotic War” and were known as “Kremlin Stars”…
Nothing, other than that’s what the factory was using that day. Some VVS squadrons also picked a “squadron color” and repainted the tactical numbers in that scheme. Yellow numbers were specific to “Factory 21” (Gor’ki) according to one source I have.

Frankly, I don’t know… Best thing I can say is to do a Google Image search and see if you can find any pictures of that…
been there done that. I dont think i can handle deciphering yellow in a black and white photo lol.
The marking in question are for an eary production MiG-21PF Fishbed D In eary Soviet FA camo (green top/grey botton) circa 1964. The decals are correct for that aircraft.
Sorry, pale blue underside. Make sure the kit is of an MF and not a PF. The PF does not have a drouge chute housing and the hump on the spine is thinner.
