I finished my Me-262. The Revell kit is very good, considering it can be bought for about $8 with a Hobby Lobby coupon. It’s probably the best Revogram kit I’ve seen- the fit is pretty good, nice detail, and overall just a very pleasent, straight forward kit.
This was my first attempt at a mottled camo job. I don’t think it turned out half bad. I think I would’ve been really happy with it, but I had the most confounding tip dry problems, which resulted in a cycle of mottle/botched mottle/cover up/mottle/botched mottle. I finally did a “good enough” and moved on.
The kit has raised panel lines, but after a handy tip here on the forums, I used a bit of chalk and it worked alright.
There was a bit of silvering on the engine nacelle decals, but it really only shows up under the flash. And I realized the nose wheel is a bit crooked from the pics, but oh well. I’m calling her done, and on the shelf she goes.
It’s nothing special, but it was fun. This is the kind of build I like- no major problems, no headaches, just a fun time getting to the end result.
If you want a fun build that doesn’t drain your wallet- I highly recommend this kit!
I like it. I think the paint came pretty good. I know exactly what you mean about the dry tip whe doing mottling. I just had the same problem with my 109 that I posted last week. I ended up using 70% isopropyl instead of the 90% stuff and I haven’t had the problem again.
Jon: Both the mottle and the model turned out nicely. Methinks you did fine withthe raised panel lines, as well. Now I’m waiting for the P-47. If you can make the Revell P-40B look nice, you’ll have a hayday (or month) with the Tamiya Jug.
Hey, nice job on the mottling. Better than my first attempt. Good job!! and thanks for the tip on the panel lines. I have the same kit staring at me and I might have to try that .
hkshooter- Thanks! You’ll enjoy it. I didn’t open them up, but you can have the gun bay and one engine nacelle open. They’re not highly detailed, but they would look good.
ygmodeler4- Ha! OK, maybe the P-40B is the 2nd best… LOL. Thanks!
thehannaman- THanks! I’m actually switching to Tamiya. I tested some of it, and I had no tip dry issues. I’ll try the alchohol, too. (In the paint, I mean… LOL)
yardbird78- Thanks!
mkhoot- Thanks!
mucker- Thanks! Yeah, the panel lines really help it out. I actually started work on the Jug office this past weekend. Hope to have pics up by the this coming weekend.
smokinguns3- LOL- Thanks! Funny thing is, I kept looking at your pics and saying “Dang… that’s how I wanted it to look”. Grass is always greener…
wing_nut- Thanks so much! My dad actually called me that as a kid, after that song.
sidure- Thanks! Give the panel line deal a try. I applied the chalk with a brush, then blew off the excess, I used my finger to rub it down a bit. There’s a fine line between good looking panel lines and “who smudged this stuff all over my plane?!” [;)] But it doesn’t take long to get a handle on. I even tried it on a Zero. I painted the zero it’s base color, then did the chalk. The chalk was way overdone (too dark) so I started to re-paint to cover it up. I ended up noticing that if I did just a light mist- it covered up the chalk just enough to give me the “pre-shade” I wanted. So it works well whether on top of paint or under paint.
dragonfly, Dubau, JoeRugby, brain44 and Wulf- Thanks so much to all of you! I appreciate the kind words and encouragement.
I can say in all honesty that it’s this forum that has helped me improve as a modeler. Everything I’ve tried beyond the old glue-paint-sit on shelf I did as a kid was because I saw it here.
Taking a late lunch here. Wow Jon great job! Your really puting out some top quality builds. Let me know what your doing next. I put my ME 262 way back on the back burner. I don’t want to follow this act. Jon your talent is really showing in these good ol’ Revell builds.
You are too kind sir. The camera is nice to me- it blurs out a lot. I read an article in one of the UK mags where a guy said he was a 6 foot modeler. His models looked good from about 6 feet away. LOL
I just applied a coat of Future to a Tamiya 1/48 A6M2 last night, and I’m working on the office for the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Razorback. Next up will be an Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk IXc/XVIe for the Airfix GB.
