This is Revell’s sweet 1/48 F-84E kit, built straight OOB with the exception of adding a PE seat harness and some Cutting Edge decals for a MiG Killing Thunderjet from the 27th Fighter Escort Wing, Korea 1951. I started it for the NMF Group Build, stalled when my model building Mojo left last year for many months then rolled it over into the NMF II GB. I used various shades of aluminum; Humbrol, Tamiya, Testors, for the multi panel look, coated it all with Future, applied the Cutting Edge Decals, and then ran in to my first problems. CE declas did not want to conform to the compound curves very well and MicroSol was of little help. I finally got ahold of some Solvaset and that cured most of those problems, but discovered that Solvaset really kills Future. I alsohadsome staining issues with the Pro Modeler wash leaving some"salt stains" for lack of a better term and could not gett them to go away… live and learn. I hope you like…
The cockpit on this kit is one of the best I have yet seen and done in 1/48…
None- everything fit like a glove. The nose gear looks far trickier and delicate than it is I will say. Just make sure you give that plenty of time to dry. And use LOTS of weight in the nose where ever you can hide it. This one still wants to pop a wheelie![:O]
Looks very nice. I have this kit, I haven’t done anything on it, and it’s still sealed. I also have the F84G Pro Modeler klit and I just picked up a mint sealed NOS F84F for get this … 0.99 and shipping on eBay. I might build all three at once eventually after I get through my GB committed kits. I had another E kit a few years back but it had some issues like the right front landing gear door was snapped off in the box and I just couldn’t get it to stay on after that so that one went wheels up in my Daughters built stash. lol Awesome job with the decals. The instrument panel is beautiful too. Are you going to give it a little weathering? Keep up the good work.
Thanks SH. I actually have a very light wash in the panel lines, and the final topcoat of Humbrol Flat Clear gave the muted NMF I wanted. I may add some soot around the guns,but very minimal. I snapped off a couple of the gear doors durig painting handling but had no problems glueing them back in place. I have the ProModeler F-84G and the older F-84F in the stash as well. I will be using another set of markings off the same CE decal sheet for the G and going in on the decal issues will make a difference. I will also paint the anti glare panel rather than the decal as well as the nose color.[8-|]
LOL! I do that all the time myself. Here is a shot of the seat I used in the GB forum for a better look at the harness. I painted it on the PE fret, removed it then attached. As you can see it needed some touching up.
Well, my fellow IPMS Chapter members liked this build. 3rd place in the Master category. My first entry in that category since I was moved up to that level, and it placed! I am very jazzed. Lets just say that the other builders there are most impressive and I am truly honored to have earned the respect of the chapter to be there. I have some serious work to keep up with the Joneses…[:O]
