Hi guys, can anyone tell me if this is a good kit ? Not the cutaway version with the laughable interior, only I’m after a U-Boat project but don’t have the cash or the space for the 1/72 monster just yet.

It can be made into a nice looking model, but the dimensions in some area just don’t look right. Still, it looks like a Type VII when its done.
Nautilus Models also does a nice wooden deck and resin bits for the 1/125 kit.

Not too bad then. I think I’ll go for it…
The molds are mostly that same as the U-47 I am building (except of course the U-99 doesn’t have the funny interior). Assuming the mold quality is the same, you can expect:
- ejector pin marks all over the upper deck (around 45)
- some broken railings
- the “teeth” (wire cutter???) in front may not have been molded properly so you’ll have to file it even
Overall, the fit is OK with little warping. You may need to scratchbuild some parts for the deck gun an the AA gun, though.
The plastic is easy to cut and sand. Easy to paint, too.
What are you going to use for the rigging? I haven’t made up my mind yet, but I won’t need to decide so soon, as this project is taking longer than I thought.
I realy like that kit. I built it as a novice modeler, and I want to get another one. I will defintely get the Nautilus set, when I re-do it.
As for rigging, I may try fly tying thread, or fine guage invisible thread.
In fact, I think I will get a third and kitbash it into a starship. Hmm…
I think I have this kit but the box says it’s U-505! U-505 was a type IX and this kit is definitely a type VII. I built the U-47 when I was a kid and this kit looks a lot like the U-47 minus the cutaway feature.

Thanks for directing me. I’m glad I was able to find a kit for a real Type IX. I built it for someone with a story connecting with U-66. I’m glad I did research to discover that the Revell U-505 was a fake.

Just joined and saw your post. The Revell 1:125 U-99 can build into a very nice model.
Considering that the kit is at least 30 years old, one should not expect the quality and
accuracy found in today’s kits. But hey, we are modelers! so take out those tools and
some styrene and have some fun!!!

Hi, I built this about 15 years ago and had it “surfacing” in a plaster sea with rough waves etc: It looks quite well and atmospheric. With base it ended up 2 feet long so it is still showable in an average room. At the time I was convinced all subs were black, so I painted mine black even though I had already painted it grey! What the heck, the general public don’t know. There was a U-boat at sea in FSM mag gallery that looked great, don’t recall which one though.
