Is this a stick and tissue kit?
Finding your model size is easy. Say you want to model the USS Iowa. Just google USS Iowa and find out it’s 887 feet long (plus 3 inches but that won’t really matter for our purposes). So then if you get a 1/350 model of it, the model will be 887/350 = 2.53 ft long. A 1/200 scale model of it would be 887/200 = 4.43 ft long. Can do the same thing for a plane or tank or ship or actual spacecraft in whatever scale. Now for science fiction items…you’d have to find out how big they SAID it was in the show or movie.

Thanks, finding larger scale models is definitely a challenge. Local hobby shops don’t seem to carry much inventory at all … empty shelves. If anyone has sources for larger models please share.

When you say finding “large scale models” is a challenge, just how “large” is large?
For armor biggest I’ve seen is 1/16. For aircraft, 1/24. For ships, 1/200. But of course that’s just my experience, and off the top of my head. I don’t do space stuff so no idea there. And typically, the larger you get in scale, the smaller the selection you have to chose from. Manufacturers aren’t going to make many 1/24 aircraft because A) they are expensive, and B) who has the room to display a 1/24 B-52?
As for where to look for them… These are places I use a lot, in no particular order. And there are lots of others that people could list, this is just what I gravitate toward:
I’d recommend you just pick a subject you are interested in, and don’t worry too much about size and complexity on the first one and just build it to have some fun. Then get bigger and more complex as you get into it. Just my two cents, dive in and don’t worry about the first one being the perfect kit you want.
