restoring fabric wings

Hi all:
I’m building the Sword 1/72 Hurricane MK 1. It features the fabric covered wings of early Mk1s.
Did any of the Mk 1s, have fabric covered wings durring the battle of britian?
If so, I’ve sanded the “fabric” of the wings, and behind the cockpit where it was covered as well. How do I fix this, to make the fabric wings and fuselage?

Although most of the Hurricanes had their fabric wings replaced by metal, several retained the fabric wings well into the Battle of Britain. Restoring the fabric effect is a tough nut. All I can think of is streched sprue carefully glued on and sanded to shape. Maybe someone who has actually done it will pipe up.

You don’t say how hard you sanded, but if the model was molded with a roughness that simulated the weave in the fabric, and that is all that got sanded away, then don’t worry. I have covered fabric areas on museum restorations and after they are doped you don’t see the weave. The only way you can tell they are fabric is the slight shrinkage between the ribs.

i agree with the above but the streched sprue has to be very fine. if the weave is gone and the rib effect is still there then thats fine. one thing i have read is to lightly score the plastic to simulate ribs for WW1 biplanes, havn’t tried it myself but i am sure someone out there will have.
hope this helps.

7474;
here’s an easy way to do fabric on any kit, fisrt off get the curved tip Exacto knife blades I think it’s # 10 or 12, but it looks like a scalpe blade, first off use the rounded blade, start in the middle and work to the edges of where the stringer is going to be, on ailerons it take about 11 to 15 passes to get the effect, on the Hurricanes fuglage it’ll be fewer, but the key is mark the stringer lines and scrape in between them, and take your time, also there was an artical FSM ran on how to do this a few years ago, this is where I got the Idea and used it on my Monogram P-39, P-40 and they came out better then expected, but like I said relax, take your time and have fun
