Resin Rotor Repair: Graphics intensive how-to guide

Hi everyone.

Here is the promised tutorial for fixing resin rotors (look for a similar tutorial as well on fixing deep gashes in a 1/35 rotor), I got one blade finished tonight, three to go. Not bad, just don’t let your talcum powder/ glue mix set for too long. 20 minutes is about right to start sanding/ polishing it out. I used layered strip stock on the bottom side of the rotor to reinforce the split line, just as we would on a full size aircraft repair to increase the overall stregth of the new joint. Mix your talcum powder and superglue to the consistancy of warm toothpaste and apply. The strip stock on the bottom was chamfered to reduce its edge thickness-it is much less noticable now than when I installed it, while the overall profile of that section of the blade has not dramatically increased. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask. I learned this technique of using superglue and talcum a month ago at our club meeting and I have been using it extensively ever since! I am using a six inch steel ruler with depressions on both sides that I got at a dime store, using that as my jig to hold the blades where I want them, as well as holding them with tape in that position while I sand and contour. Total time for this repair was under one hour, and that was fiddling with the camera, trying different things, etc. so I see the rest going much faster.

Hey David,

Any luck with those blades? You may have already tried this but you may want to make a jig to keep them right while they cool? You may have to play around with them and actually hold the slightly beyond where you want them to end up with the desired shape. I have never tried this with resin, but I have dealt with other ‘plastics’ that this worked for.

the reheat times2 didnt work, it slowly returned to the previosly curved shape. Odd!

Im going to go ahead and saw them apart, lay a strip of .005" on the bottom and fill the gap with talcum/ superglue mix and let that harden against a staighedge. Also on the talcum mix, look for a tutorial in the next day or so on fixing seriously damaged blades that have come into contact with vinyl MG feed belts. These rotors are RUINED but Im fixing them :-).

Ill get pics of my progress on the HSL rotors as well.

I like your persistence. I would have just dropped the $ for the two kits. I have never tried the talcum and CA mix. The tutorial will be helpful to add to the bag of tricks.

That tutorial could prove useful. I have an Anigrand S-67 on the way.

Lemme know how it goes with the S-67. The 67 has much wider chord rotors than the HSL did, so you should not have any problems there. I have pinned the fueselage together with cut straight pins embedded in drilled sockets to bring the fueselage halves into alignment,and it is working well. There is only a minor step to deal with that way. I will finish up the other rotors tonight, contest day is only 2 weeks away now!
