Hi guys,
I’ve never used resin and PE parts before, but I’m going to order some of thos stuff.
Is there something special I need to know about these things?
Special painting techiques, using other glue… ?
Please give me some general advice.
Really need your help…
Cheers,
Jürgen
For resin you have to wear a mask to protect yourshelf from the dangerous dust.
Resin and PE, you can glue with any instant or two part epoxy glue.
A primer is good not only for good coating but also to check small air bubbles on resin.
Also I recommend an enamel primer for PE parts.
PE bended better if you heat it on a candle…
Thats what I remember now…
Happy start with those materials dude!
What kind of primer would you recommend? I’ll be using resin for the first time too.[:)]
what should I do to dispose the resin dust and poorstubs?
I prefer enamels over acrylics as a primer as they “catch” better on surface.
As for resin dust a good mask and plenty of water for sanding,is a must.[;)]
If you can, put a piece of glass over a garbage can, put a piece of wet/dry sandpaper
on the glass and a small puddle of water. Cut off pour stubs and either keep to shape
scatch pieces or just dump in garbage can. You can “sweep” the water from the sandpaper into the can or wash it off in the sink if it gets too gummed up. I also prefer to prime resin with enamels or krylon paint (becareful around plastic - some colors will attck the plastic). It is also important that you wash all of your resin piece in a light detergent/warm water mix , scrubbing with a tooth brush, rinse and let dry (409 spray and similar as well as wipes also works to remove mold release agent) - also wear a mask, preferably one with changable filters - those paper ones are useless for the most part.
For PE, get it a light sanding. If you have to bend it in a curve, anneal it first by holding the piece over a candle until it gets red hot then dunk in a little water or let air cool - bend to shape over a round object (or one of the bending tools available). Otherwise, cut PE in a plastic bag to minimize tweezerpult and best to work in a box top to minimize disappearing acts. PE can be finiky, use what you like - you don’t have to use the entire fret. Good tools to have atleast 2 single edge razors -bending and cutting -, files, sanding sticks to get rid of the stem burrs and a pair of flat nose and needle nose pliers
for bending tasks. small pieces of PE can be glued down with future otherwise like resin use CA.
Be patient, take your time and enjoy the process
WHAT!! Resin dust is bad for you?! Oh whell I guess the 20 years of welding smoke Ive inhaled will block any bad stuff from getting in my lungs.lol
Seriously: resin dust is toxic. A few years ago a dutch modeller was hospitalised because of inhaling to much resin dust.
So sand wet and use a good quality face mask!
can one use super-glue (Cyanoacrylate) for PE parts? ive never used them before either but im about to have a go at them soon…
Cyano is the right glue for working with PE.
