Hi everyone , I recently ordered the Heller Noratlas Nord 1/72 aircraft kit from squadron.com . I wanted to build and paint the transport aircraft as used by the Israeli Defence Force “IDF/AF”. I’ve done a little bit of a search on the net for images but have only come across a couple of pic’s ; One color scheme appears to be silver or light gray ? ; the other pic shows only a part of the front fuselage with what looks to be a tan and sand scheme ? . I would like to airbrush a comouflage finish , so I was wondering if anyone could assist me in finding a couple of pic’s of the Noratlas Nord in IDF/AF service .
Wings pallette has a three IDF Noratlas profiles on their site. One is NMF pre 1964, one in sand/blue camo 1967 6 day war, and the last is in the Sand/tan/geen camo from the 1973 Yom Kippur war. I have a book of IDF aircraft from 1968-2000 I will have to dig out and see if there is mor einfo on these aircraft.
Thank’s for the help stikpusher . Unfortunatly every time I try an access the Wings Palette site my computer screen “freeze’s up” , I’m not sure what’s going on there ?? . So I would really appreciate any assistance you can give me . I also have in my stash a 1/72 Italeri C-47 Skytrain , I’m thinking of building and airbrushing her in Israeli camouflage as well . The book you mentioned sounds interesting [IDF aircraft 1968-2000] was it expensive to buy ??
the book was in the $25 USD range. It has chapters on the post 6 day war IDF:War of Attrition, Yom Kippur, Lebanon 1982, etc. and all the periods in between and after. Ill go dig it out later today. The book is well worth the cost if your a big IDF AF fan like I am.
I started building some IDF/AF aircraft during 2007 . I still have quite a few kit’s in my stash along with some Isra and Sky Decals from Squadron.com . It would be nice to have a couple of reference books about all the military Aircraft the Israeli Defence force have used . I did buy the Osprey Combat Aircraft #67 ‘Israeli F-15 Eagle Units in Combat’ ; The book was terrific for the F-15 builds but I dont want to buy books for every single military aircraft the IDF/AF use ; Rather two or three books with plenty of reference pic’s would be nice . Kind regards John
The book was published by Scale Aircraft Modeler. I looked for it awhile ago but had not luck. I will try another area later. It may be inside a kit that is packed away along with most of my stash
in boxes in my garage.
-Edit- ok found it placed in the wrong area-Scale Aircraft Monographs, Camoflage and Markings The Israeli Air Force Part Two:1967 to 2001.
It has two color profiles and three photos of the Nord 2051 Noratlas in Israeli service. Their paint scheme evolved from painted overall Aluminum to Blue and Brown uppersurfaces over Light Gray lowers, to Green/Tan/Sand over Light Blue. What time period are you looking to depict?
Bondo- no luck on the C-46. Don’t know if they were still in Israeli service after the Six Day War. Lots of C-47s, C-130s, and KC-97s though. The overall aluminum painted Noratlas’s were for low profile missions to friendly foreign countries so as not to appear “overtly” military and draw attention. They were white around the cockpit and on the upper fuselage. Yes the initial batch of Nords were a forced deal. The Israelis had to buy three in order to get a batch of Ouragon aircraft. After they found how useful they were many more were purchased. Wikpedia has a bigger explanation of the deal and purchases.
Helo, this is a great topic. I have one built C-130 Entebbe raider which I’m very fond of.
In the stash besides the S-199 are a Magister, Mystere IV and a couple of Mirage III’s.
The Holy Grail IMHO is the Vatour, which Azur announced this year but has yet to be available.
All of the above are 1/72.
It’s a real nice modeling subject because there’s a chance to cover the main bases, and the varieties are nice. B-17s, Spitfires, P-51s, S-199s, Noratlas, F-4s but the number of squadrons are small and the total number of aircraft in a given time slot are relatively few.
Helo, the advice to pick a timeframe is solid. And as I teased you up over the C-47, adversaries are very awesome subjects. Jordanian Hunters, Egyptian Spitfires, Migs, Tu-16s, fun stuff.
Didn’t mean to get OT but it’s in the spirit of your original ? Mazel tov!
Wow , thanks guy’s for the help so far . In regards to the Noratlas , I think the blue/brown camouflage scheme might suit me as I also have a Revell 1/72 Dassault Mystere IV , I was thinking of doing in the same scheme . Also seeing that I have a C-2 and C-7 Kfir , F-4 and RF-4 Phantom II’s , F-16 , C-130 , T-6 Texan , UH-1D and Gazelle in the stash all with the light blue/green/sand/tan color scheme , I should look at doing the Noratlas , C-47 and Mystere in a different scheme . I’ll check out the links you guy’s posted and see what I can find .
Kind regards John
P.S. I also bought Sky Decals IAF First Fighters Avia S-199 , P-51 and Spitfire . The decal sheet say’s it’s for 1/72 scale but the decals look to suit 1/48 scale . Am I wrong or has anyone else thought this ???
Now you’ve done it! I went and pulled the AML S-199 kit in 1/72 out of the stash. The wing roundrels are about 1/2" in diameter, the fuse’s are about 9/16" and the tail flash is 3/4" tall. To be sure, it’s a puny little model.
