Rescued Mustang...

This airplane almost went to the recycle bin! A friend convinced me not to trash it though. This is my third Mustang this summer and the second Tamiya Mustang kit build. But it almost didn’t happen. The original plan was to build a nice shiny polished Mustang but a bad primer coat killed that idea. At that point I was ready to move on to something else. Fortunately my friend prevailed. Here are some pictures:

. The Mustang as I tried to remove the Gloss Black Alclad Primer

. The fresh MM enamel gray primer with two colors of pre-shading.

. NATO Black pre-shading on top of the two colors.

Below, the finished Rescue Mustang of the 357th Fighter Group. Topside camo is MM Dark Green enamel. Underside is MM Neutral Gray enamel. The decals are a mix of kit decals and SuperScale. I used a Q-Tip to rub some artist oils black into the white of the decals so the color wouldn’t be so stark against the dark green color. In the center of some panels I used white oil paint to lighten the panels for some color variation.

You owe your friend a couple of cold ones.

Beautiful save.

Stay Safe.

Beautiful compromise Frank!

Nice save Frank.

Thanks, y’all. Twenty hours of work saved me about $30.

Nice save Frank!

Very nice. Excellent save and worth the effort. I had to do that to one of my 51’s. I’m glad I did, it’s easily my favorite mustang.

That’s a great P-51! You would never know you had problems. Glad you decided to save her! I had a similar problem with a Japanese Zero not long ago, but I also went ahead and adapted and overcame. These things are too expensive nowadays to toss! [:)]
