Has anyone here ever repurposed old models into something different? Repaint, Rebuild, that sort of thing? I have an old 76 Chevy pickup.that I have repurped at least twice and now on the 3rd time. Turning it into a lifted post apocalyptic wasteland like bug-out truck. It is definitely a Work in Progress
Not me, I barely have time to build a kit once ![]()
I am slowly rebuilding the few dioramas I completed in the late 1970s/early 1980s that have survived 40 or so years of neglect. But all of my other 7 projects underway are slowing me down.
I have used older models to experiment with different techniques
If I ever have to get rid of a model for any reason and/or if the model is broken/damaged, I’ll salvage whatever parts I can from the model and use them on future builds. Aircraft and ship models are great for this. I’ve salvaged a lot of armament, guns, etc.
Yes - recently I found quite a few models I built several decades ago, and as I am getting back into the hobby I used these to test techniques and hone skills while giving them new life.
Here are some visual examples:
And 2 jets:
i’m kitbashing eventually 17 kits of Revell’s 1/429 scale model of the USS Arizona into the ships of the Wyoming class up to the Colorado class during ww2 with the 17th as a missile gunnery training ship AG128 USS Mississippi in the 1950’s.
Wow! That is a fascinating (and large) project. Good luck. I look forward to seeing your progress.
The concept is interesting. Would love to see some pictures.
Wow!
That is quite the undertaking - very interested to see your progress. Very cool!
I only keep around six finished kits on my shelf. The recycle bin eats everything else that’s not worthy of the shelf.
I have a Fujimi (I think) USS New Jersey that started as a demo/touch toy for displays of the Battleship New Jersey Historical Museum Society. When that project was successfully completed I turned what was left of it (kids and their fingers, but that was the point) into an alternate history Iowa class, then again into another alternate history, and now I’m pondering yet another alternate history. Unfortunately the older versions’ photos are lost to the electronic dustbin.
Old models are great for learning and practicing techniques!
They’re also good for teaching young people how, or having around for said young people to handle and play with so they don’t touch the really, really expensive models.
