Am new to ship building (this is my second). Thought I would try a wash to highlight deck caulking and weather the deck. Disaster! So badly did this turn out that I want to remove all paint and start over. The base paint is acrylic and the wash was a diluted enamel (used mineral spirits).
Is it hopeless ? or can someone point me to information that could save my ship.

Oven cleaner removed paint right down to the plastic. Haven’t tried it myself but it might damage some of the detail. Others here will know more. Welcome to the forums.

Short-term application of oven cleaner will not harm polystyrene or resin. A long-term application (i.e. a week or more) may make the PS more brittle but will not harm details. Oven cleaner may affect photoetched metal details.
Oven cleaner is caustic. Be sure to use eye and skin protection.
To do just the deck I think I’d spray the cleaner in a bowl and paint the deck with a disposable chip brush from the hardware store. Don’t bag the model as fumes are generated and they will affect the paint on the hull. Apply a second coat after an hour or so. Leave on over night and wash off the next day. Repeat as needed to remove stubborn paint.
