removing acrylic paint

brush-painted the lower hull and turret and now decided to airbrush the upper hull. much easier than i remember! (3 cheers for gunze sangyo) now i want to strip the crappy looking paint job from the turret and redo it with the airbrush. it’s not coated or anything, just straight paint. soak it in windex? would soaking it in water do it?

Last time I had to strip acrylic, I used a little bit of thinner on the end of a q-tip with a paper towell handy to wipe up the excess. I also used finger nail polish remower once, it smelled better than thinner.

i use windex it works well

jwest told me about some great remover… model master acryllic cleaner… about 5 or 6 bucks at your LHS. worked great for me

Use it with an old toothbrush to get the paint out of the recesses

Does brake fluid affect the underlying plastic at all?

brake fluid disolves my hands too, i think i’ll stay away from it. [:D]

Just use Windex with ammonia, works great and won’t damage the plastic.

[#ditto]I keep a spray bottle of windex by my basement sink and use it to clean out my airbrush jars and it works great at stripping acrylic paint. I had to do it twice to my Puma and it worked superb!!( notice I used superb in a sentence!! I’z edjamacated!!)

q-tip and lighter fluid works very also

Windex with Lemon Ammonia. Mix it, it turns bright green. Works great.

The testors acryll thinner works well, I just used it tonite, parallel to this thread. I never thought about windex.

An article I read said he (the author) had used most every method mentioned above, but the method that worked the best for him was to use Westley’s Bleach Whyte. It’s a tire cleaner sold in autoparts stores for about $5 for either a 32 oz or 64 oz (can’t remember which) bottle.

I’ve used the Testor’s acryl cleaner, the type in the metal can, and it’s some
ya-ha stuff. But I’ve seen it score plastic. I don’t know what’s in it, but it will not only disolve dried acrylics, it will take up dried enamels as well. In fact, I havn’t found any paint it won’t lift!
