With all the fuss of everyone using bare metal foil for masking, I thought I’d give it a go. I now see what the fuss is about as it really shows up all the panels lines and where to cut. I did make the mistake of not using a new blade, as it tore instead of cutting. Anyway, I’ve removed some of the foil and have noticed it has left a little bit of adhesive on the canopy. The canopy has been futured, and would like to know what i should use to remove the adhesive without ruining the finish. Any and all advise is greatly appreciated.
Did you try just running it under warm water and rubbing at it with your finger? You could also try some mineral spirits depending on what type of paint you used…
What I have started doing is masking with the foil BEFORE I future the canopy. I paint with enamels so I am able to just use good old rubbing alcohol and a Q-Tip to get the residue off, then future, then just brush paint a little dullcote or flat onto the painted panels.
Depending on what you painted it with, if the water doesnt work you can always just use the alcohol and then future it again.
I have had good luck with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. I use enamels for painting, not sure what the alcohol would do to acrylic paint, so try a test piece before using it with acrylics.
Hi Everyone and thank-you for your tips. I’ve been using acrylic paints on the canopy. I found the isoproply alcohol has worked the best with a Q tip. But it is slow going and hard to get into the corners. and it does strip off the paint, all be it slowly. Once finished I contemplated brush painting the canopy again, but just before i did i had a light bulb moment, the canopy actually looked worn with some of the paint off. I did use a primer and that added to the effect. I will use silver primer next time.
