This is the Regulus One I built for my diorama and is almost finished. I have to install the JATO bottles and parabreak cable. After that I will install it on the launcher and show it in the Diorama forum. The model is made totally of wood and is 1/32 scale.

I turned the fuselage on a wood lathe and shaped the wings and tail on a belt sander after rough cutting them.

Richard, it sure looks right to me. What kind of wood did you use, and how did you get that great surface?
As you may know, there is a submarine (I’m embarrassed I can’t remember the name of the sub, maybe one of my homeboy’s here can tell us) docked next to the USS Intrepid here in NYC that has a Regulus I raised on the launcher, with the “hangar” on deck open. What I can’t figure out, is how the Navy got from the fat, Buck Rogers-looking Reg I to that sleek, still-modern looking Regulus that came after it.
I see yours is in a nice test scheme. The one here in the city is painted gloss sea blue all over, and I don’t know if that is accurate or not for an operational bird. But at least it’s nice to know these early cruise missiles weren’t all scrapped or destroyed in testing. I’ve read many of the early cruise missiles were used as target drones, but don’t know if that’s true.
And let’s hear it for a modeler with the guts to take matters into his own hands when there’s no kit available.

what did you use to seal the wood ? spray on primer or powerfiller ? or something else ?

Tom - the sub next to the Intrepid is the USS Growler and was a boat out of Pearl Harbor making nuclear deterent runs to the north west Pacific. The color blue is in fact the color of the tactical weapon. Yes, they did in fact expend most of the Regulus missiles as target drones. The wood is poplar and I did use two coats of white primer and five coats of plastic enamel.
Reggie - it is primer from a spray can.
Stinger - the dio is not far away.
Glen - don’t be jealous - be determined like Reggie said.

Richard: Is that photo on your signature some kind of FJ-2 or 3 drone controller flying chase on that Regulus I? I’ve never heard of such an animal, but it appears there is some kind of unusual data link antenna sticking up from the nose.

You are keenly observant as what you see is an antenna that is connected to the Collins radio control system and the FJ-3 is in fact controlling yhe missile at an altitude of 30 feet and an airspeed of over 400 knots. They used the TV-2 (2 seat F-80) as the pickup at launch and landing aircraft for the Fleet Training Missiles launched from the land.

Beautiful work! I guess you’ve answered the question I left in your Skyray dio thread, about available kits. I was hoping for something in 1/72, to go with my Hasegawa T-33.
I plan to do it as a TV-2D from GMGRU-1 in Hawaii, since I’ve got some good refs in an old Hook magazine I picked up at a LHS. Since I have no woodworking skills, I’ll have to figure out how to do it in styrene. Thanks for the inspiration.
