You can find me over in the ship forum almost any day but I want to try something new. I’m looking to build the Red Baron Fokker DR-1. Anyone out there tell me what kit I should look at? I want some nice detail. Any advice you could give would be great.
You can’t go wrong with Eduard or Roden in 1/72 scale. If you really want some good detail, I think Part makes a photoetch set for those kits.
You can see Roden’s stuff here: http://www.rodenplant.com/
and here: http://www.rodenplant.com/HTML/010.htm
and Eduard’s stuff here: http://www.eduard.cz
As I understand it, Manfred von Richthofen flew a number of Dr.1 fighters. The one he died in was painted all red, but at least one other was partially red – it looks like the graphic on Roden’s home page.
Of course, the Red Baron also flew Albatros fighters (in fact, he got most of his kills in Albatros fighters). So you could build a whole series of his planes if you wanted to.
Dragon/DML made a 1/48 scale Dr.1, but it is (AFAIK) out of print. Still, you could search places that swap kits for a copy. It’s supposed to be one heck of a nice kit. I’ve got their 1/48 Spad 13, and it’s a beauty.
Regards,
Check out the Mad Fokker Day…!

The best 1/72 kit is probably the new Revell kit; In bigger scales, Dragon’s 1/48 offering is great too. Revell/Minicraft venerable 1/28 is not a good option unless you want to spend a lot of money buying PE and other bits to improve it…
Ah yes, I’d forgetten about the new Revell kit. From all accounts I’ve read, it’s a great kit.
Regards,
Chris, Scale Aviation Modelling has an excellent comparison article on the Eduard & Revell kits in 1/72, in this month’s edition.
Don’t know if you get this over there, or if you are considering 1/72, but it’s well worth a look.

THats Right Bash The OLD Revel Large Scale Kit THat RIGHT ! Gee Isn’t PE , Resin, Scratch building, reference material, what this Hobbies ALL about these Days? No Doubt you guys have a point, the MICROSCOPIC 1/72 SCALE Lines are very good.
Of COurse No One wants to tell you if you REALLY want to spend some cash, ie. $475.00 ish Hasegawa has re-issued thier multi-media 1/8 Scale Dr-I. Any one who says that kits not worth it cause of the cost Dosen’t have it or ignores all the kit reviews on the issue. Thats nice too!
Mg, I never said the old 1/28 Revell kit was bad. But if you remember, Chris is after some NICE details… Unfortunately, due to its age (must be 40 years old now!), the old Revell kit just does not compare well with newer kits. There’s probably more details in the new 1/72 Revell kit than in the 1/28 one. In fact, there is. I’ve built the 1/28 kit 3 times over the years. I have the new 1/72 kit ready for Mad Fokker Day.
I did not say one could not get a decent model out of the 1/28 kit. I did manage to do it. And if you do not want to buy PE sets (that’s all you’ll find for that kit - and that’s all you’d need really), there’s always the good old sratchbuilding techniques. However, scratchbuiling not one but two 1/28 machine gun jackets for the Dr.1 is just crazy, when you can get them in PE for just a few $…
Thanks to all you guys for the help. I’ll be sure to keep you informed on how it’s going. I’m sure I’ll have some more questions once I get into the build.
DJ no harm. I didnt mean anything. I havent bought a 1/72 in a long time. I bought out a about 1/2 doz wwI AIRFIX/REVEL 1/72 KITS last year to make a mobile for my newborns, alas Iam afraid to date their still in their boxes. The girls have forced me into beomeing a Kit collector rather than a builder for now. Ive aquired so many the only thing I have left to order are advance sales and aftermarket kits.
Welcome to “our” world. I’m afraid that having family’s have done this to most of us a one time or another.
You know what though, you guys are great builders and good posters as well. I am gratefull to have my FSM, Squadrom monthly mailings and weekly Greatmodels emails, and this site as well. I’ve gained invaluble reserch photos information, and sometimes most helpful other builders experience with some of these new expensive issued kits coming out last year and this. LOng as I can get to learn and practice and refine my Airbrush art I am READY to jump back in and get to building!
Mg, get those kits out and start building them…! If you have the Rland Walfish, it’s a cutie, maybe the best of the bunch…! But if you’re really into WWI planes, foirget Airfix and ESCI and the old Revell kits. Go Roden, MAC, Eduard, and of course the new Revell Dr.1…! ![]()
DJ BLess you for the encougement ! I WILL Some How Some Way ! I must !
