I’m a newbie to this site and hope I’m posting this in the correct area.
Could anyone recommend a manufacturer and a supplier of a Twin Otter on floats (any scale). I’m new to modelling so would like to find something reasonably straight forward in construction, with a realistic scale effect.
I know there’s two companies at least that make it in 1:72, both have an option for floats, hobbycraft and modelcraft though I’ve never seen or heard anything about them, it would probably be a nice scale for those things. I’m an Avionics student and I just spent the last week on practicum working on those things pulling wires. They have some holes in those things that I had to work in that I just wasn’t meant to fit into, like running the cable into the tail for the nav antenna, pretty stinking cool planes though.
There may be others, but these are the only two I’m aware of. Search on ebay for these kits, and I’m sure they’ll be available in some of the better Local Hobby Shops, good luck!
Reggie,
I don’t know about the Modelcraft but have built the Matchbox, its ok but not
great. When its finished with good paint it “looks right” but is probably not exact.
Also they are getting hard to find.
Good Hunting,
G.W.

Hi. As previous posters have stated, the only Twin Otter in 1:72 is the Matchbox kit, which has been re-released (though horribly overpriced) by Modelcraft. You may still be able to pick up the Matchbox boxing if you’re lucky, but if not, you’ll have to dig deeper into your pocket for the Modelcraft issue.
As I recall, the Matchbox kit does not come with a float option but you may be able to use the floats from the Hobbycraft Otter. I’m not an expert on the Otter/Twin Otter, but I’d reckon the floats would probably be right.
The Matchbox Twin Otter certainly does have floats. About the only landing gear it doesnt have are the larger low pressure tires for rough field work. Its got standard wheels, skis and the afore mentioned floats.
As mentioned, the Modelcraft is simply a reissue of the Matchbox kit.

Ahhh, I see… even though I have several unbuilt Matchbox Twin Otters in my stash, I haven’t looked at them for years, so I wasn’t sure about this. Thanks for the enlightenment. Cameraman should be set then.
Love the Twin Otter - attractive aircraft with a rugged nature. The possibilities for markings are almost limitless!
I’ve got the Modelcraft (Matchbox re-issue) Twotter and it looks pretty good to me. As previously stated it comes with floats, wheels, and wheel-skis. It also comes with both types of noses; the stubby nose, and the longer baggage compartment nose.
The Twin Otter is another one of those “Why the hell don’t more model manufacturers put one out” aircraft. I mean they are operated all over the world by civilian and military users.
