Really small airliners

Does anyone know a source for 747, MD-11, 707, 727, etc models that are really really small. I’m talking on the order of 1-1.5" long or smaller. Probably scale 1/700 or less. I want to build some dios of entire airports. and some surrounding landscape for a friend who is a retired airline pilot. He loved the old Hong Kong airport with the checkerboard approach over the big hill.

Can’t answer your question unfortunately but I hope you find some because that would be an awesome dio. I’ve thought about making something like that but involving the new tower at Port Columbus Airport here in Ohio.

Hello I-beam,

I think you are out of luck in 1:700, unless if you get a modeller (or yourself) to scratchbuild them. I’ve seen a few 1:1000 but they are pitiful.

If on othe other hand you are willing to use 1:500, this is your lucky day. A german company that specializes in miniatures, Herpa Wings, has a ton of planes (75 airplane types from 139 airlines) , airport accessories plus diorama accesories. They also have them in 1:400 & 1:200. Go to their website and check it out, you can also download the whole catalog as a PDF file and you’ll have a field day.

Main Website: http://www.herpa.de
Wings: http://www.herpa.de/wings/wings_e.asp

You can order from their website or go to Google and search for Herpa Wings. One place I found is http://www.tamcosystems.com/aviation/herpa/index.shtml, but you’ll have to do some shopping around for best prices. They are not cheap, on average, each 1:500 plane is between 10 & 20 dollars but for that scale I think they look very good.

Hope this helps. And if you do it, I’d love to see it.

PS: Check www.airlinercafe.com for a Berlin airport diorama. It took the guy 3 years to do it!
