Hey all-I’m thinking of building a Typhoon for the Mud Movers GB and my choices are Hasegawa & Monogram. I’ve read plenty on the Hasegawa but little kit info is available regarding the Monogram. My questions would be-Does it have engraved panel lines? How much detail is in the cockpit? Your overall thoughts on the Monogram kit?
I built the Monogram Typhoon about 10 years ago. I think it’s comparable to other Monogram kits of that era - raised panel lines, little to no detail in the cockpit and wheel wells. But when I built that kit, I wasn’t even aware of such fine detailing possibilities, as I was just getting back into the hobby and still did things the way I had done them as a kid, except with a larger budget and developing skills with a rudimentary Testors airbrush.
It’s a nice kit for its time but if I was to build another Typhoon, I’d definitely get the Hasegawa.
I prefer the Monogram Tiffy because of the “drawbacks” in it’s panel lines and details… Most kits with engraved panel lines, the lines are way outta scale and too deep… Makes them look like die-cast toys, IMHO… Strip styrene and stretched sprue makes short work of lack of molded details…
The Monogram Typhoon is a newer type. No doors and a Bubble canopy, So I would say depends on what type and A/C your looking to model. I Agree with Hans about the age issues being overcome with some TLC.
