does anyone else feel frustrated when they see a decent company like Polar Lights (which has produced some VERY decent subjects) come out with something stupid like “The Homer?” I don’t know about you folks, but I could think of a lot of subjects more worthy than that. . .
Hey, I like “The Homer.” That was a hilarious episode, and I remember thinking at the time that a model of that car would be a hoot. [:D]

My 5 year old would probally disagree with you, he loved building that kit. I think that if we are wanting our hobby to survive and more kids get interested in it , then companie need to have things like that kit to grab the attention of the younger kids. It may be a big goofy looking car, but the look on my boys face while building it was worth every bit of the kits short comings.
I’m thinking that kits like the “Homer” are a good thing for this hobby. It adds to the hobby as a whole. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. But, maybe somewhere there is a kid that saw the kit and talked his parents into letting him get it. And another modeler is created (born?). Not everyone wants to do tank, ships, and aircraft.
So encourge them to continue to put out this type of stuff. We need all the choices we can get. IMHO [soapbox]

I have no problems with a company doing off-beat kits, I quiet enjoy building them at times.
Refreshing change from the more serious and typical plastic models.
Also enjoyed the Airfix Wallace and Gromit Kits, great fun.
Hasegawa’s egg-plane serious was another set of great off-beat Models and miniature diorama.
I also got the Revell Germany Werner’s Bike Kits still waiting for the figures to hit the shelf over here, another great set of off-beat model with a twist from the norm.
Nobody forces you to buy ANY kit, but the companies wouldn’t produce them unless there wasn’t a market for them.
I agree, those odd ball kits got a lot of kids started. I remember getting Alfred E Neumann and Rube Goldberg kits when I was younger. They made a change from WW2 planes and were great conversation pieces too.

I just finished the Homer and had a bit of fun with it. Also did the Jetson’s spaceship a while back with my son as he built his. It’s something we can share together and hopefully spark the desire to build more stuff as a dad-son team. Right now we’re working on his Pinewood Derby car for Cub Scouts. It’s all about fun at our house.[:D][;)]
I think it’s a great way to get the younger ones involved in modeling…who wouldn’t want to model their favorite cartoon character when they were kids!!! Tom and Jerry anyone??

I think it’s a good thing for the hobby in general. Definitely not something you would see Revelogram throw out there as that might be too “risky” for them business wise. While Im not a huge Simpsons fan…Homer is one cool toon! Heather actually wants to build this…So Im thinking about picking it up for her, who knows I might have to get 2 after I see hers.

I don’t feel any more frustration upon seeing “The Homer” than I do when seeing any other new kit that I’m not particularly interested in building, whether it be wacky cartoon vehicles or yet another 1/48 P-51 or Bf109 (don’t get me wrong, I love 'Stangs and 109s, but they’re just not my cup of tea!)
As many have aleady said, if nutty subjects like that pull in more and more budding modellers, then how can it be a bad thing? .
Heck, I remember that as a wee lad one of favorite models was Snoopy’s Doghouse!
The Homer was supposed to be a goofy car, the whole point of the episode was what happens when you let a complete idiot design a car. It was a total failure and drove the company out of business. Any Simpsons fan would like that model, and I plan to buy one, just to have some goofiness around here. It wasn’t made as a kids model, but as a bit of fan service. Kids would probably like it though.
I just finished the Yellow Submarine Beatles’ figures for a friend-it was fun! I hope to do the creature some day! I more dismayed by yet another 1/35 scale German WWII field kitchen.
I think its a good idea… I prefer a company (actually this applies more to my music taste) that can have a laugh and show its also got a good sense of humor.
