RAF Bombers and weathering

I am gathering supplies to build the 1/48 Wellington. It dawned on me quickly that I didn’t know how to treat the large surfaces that are painted black. Does anyone have some suggestions on approaching painting the RAF bombers in regards to weathering and making the black surfaces look “right”? thanks Dan

I always apply Tamiya Nato Black, really a very dark green/grey, then go over the panel edges with straight black. This breaks up the monotony of all over black.

Thanks Karl, I was wondering about pre shading, didn’t know to use a darker or lighter shade on the panel lines. Dan

You’ll struggle to find many panel lines; the Wellington was entirely covered in fabric.
