I was inspired by the most recent edition of FSM to build one of those Schneider Trophy racers, mainly because I will be entering a contest in a couple months and that became on of the catagories. Anyway, my idea was to stick a P-51 on floats and some sort of jet plane on floats. I have yet to figure out the rules for the jet category yet, all I know it has to be in 1/72.
So, I would like to know if there are any companies that sell resin floats and the things to connect them to an aircraft or if I have to pick up an actual floatplane and kit bash them together? If I have to kit bash them, what are the best ones to use?
I don’t know anything about 1:72 kits, but I should think a float–a pontoon, as civilians call 'em–would be about the simplest thing in the world to carve and shape in a small piece of hardwood, then use it to make a mold and do your own resin pieces, whether you want the airplane to have one or two floats.
I too was inspired by the very same article. I am using balsa carved and sanded as masters for resin casting. Not hard at all. Refer to the May 2005 Issue of FSM for an excellent how to article…not exactly sure which 1/72 plane I will be using as of yet though…possibly a P40…
Because I think it is time for me to build a Mustang again. Plus, I want to practice some kitbashing on a seemingly simple project.
Thanks for the input guys. I picked up a cheapo supermarine kit and am going to scavenge the floats for my project. What I do with the rest of the kit is another story (I hate wasting a perfectly good kit, even if it only cost 6.00) I’ll keep those that sell resin floats in mind for my second project, if I actually get around to a jet seaplane. p [:D]
