Questions on future and dullcoat use

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and I started getting back into modeling two years ago. I have several questions. I’ve read on the forum that you need to apply future to flat finishes before applying your decals. 1. Do you thin it and if so what should I use? 2. How many coats should I put on? 3. After the decals are put on do I respray the entire model with future, or do I spray Testors dullcoat on to get back to the flat finish look? 4. I painted the model with Testors enamal paints. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scat

I usually put on 2 coats of Future, unthinned, to the entire model and let it set up for at least 24 hours before putting on decals. After the decals have completely dried, another 12 to 24 hours, I again put on one more coat of Future, usually only over the decals themselves, and let this dry. Then I apply my washes. After any touch-ups and the washes are dry, it’s time for the Dullcoat, or any flat clear coating, to prep the surface for drybrushing and pastel weathering.

Welcome to the forum and hope this helps,
Robert

Welcome to FSM Don.

I do mine slightly different than Robert.

  1. I don’t thin Future, just spray it straight from the bottle.
  2. I usually only use 1 coat before applying the decals.
  3. After the decals have had at least 24 hours to fully set, then I go straight to a dullcote.

Best thing is to try a couple of different methods until you achieve the results that you want.

Enjoy the forums !!!
