Question with round decals

I will soon need to use a round decal (USCG Logo). Should I try to cut it from the sheet and keep the round shape, or is it OK to cut it as a square? Will I see the square shape after I use Micro set?
Thanks

Couple of different factors involved here zlee1 … first of all is it going onto a gloss or a flat finish paint ? Decals always adhere better to gloss paints so if it is a flat surface I would give the area where the decals go a coat of future or other gloss-cote.

Second the decal itself, it is always better to trim the decal as close as possible.

Thirdly I prefer to use the decal set then decal sol method instead of using just the set solution.

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks for your reply.

  1. Gloss paint,
  2. 2 coats of Future.
  3. Then Microsol.
  4. Apply the decal.
  5. Microset.
  6. another 2 coats of Future.

What do you think? Do I have this right?
Lee

steps 3 and 5 are reversed but other than that just fine … it should be set first … then sol.

Wait! now I’m confused:
I thought Microsol was used to set the decal in place and Microset was used to desolve the decal once it is in place. Are you telling me that I should brush on Microset before applying the decal? Then I should apply the Microsol on top of the decal?

I use a product called Super Set and Super Sol, which I assume (gosh I hate that word) is much the same as Micro Set and Micro Sol.

The Set solution is used to “set” the decal in place.
The Sol solution is used to make the decal “lay down” and “become one with your model”.

What I do is brush a little “set” on the location where the decal is going to be located, apply the decal, and then bursh a little more “set” over the decal. After it has set (15 mins to 1 hour), I will apply the “sol” solution. If needed the next day I will apply a second brushing of “sol”, if not, on with the gloss / dull - cote.

Robert,
You are correct. I made a mistake.
First MicroSet (blue label) Then MicroSol (red label)
Thanks for your help,
